Okay, I've read that unoccupied houses in our natal charts aren't areas of major focus in life and when I look at my own chart, I have to agree. So for me the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th, and 12th houses aren't areas of particular importance. (Some of you may be reading this and gasp -- What? 7th and 8th NOT important?!!) Right!

So, my question for those of you who have insight, please explain to me what would cause an unoccupied house to turn on, even temporarily. Don't tell me that having someone's personal planet or luminary landing there will do the trick because I know that's NOT so; we meet people all the time that will have something like that land in our houses. It has to be something else more focused than that. What?

Talking synastry which, in my case, only means generally getting along with someone in a positive, productive way, not necessarily long term commitments or romance. If you are even going to consider a ltr with someone, it's best you make sure you have a good basic friendship with them first, right? You want to be sure you can get along with them if you are going to be stuck with them forever. This is why I like to start here, nothing serious, just basic comradery:

Their Venus in my fifth or seventh houses.
Their Jupiter in my fifth house.
And ninth house, can't forget that! Ninth house sun/moon/Venus/Jupiter. People neglect to mention it, but the ninth house is considered very important/beneficial, traditionally. The sun is, supposedly, at it's best when located here. It becomes a great benefit to the one who has it.

This formula tends to work for me.

Are your 5th and 7th houses unoccupied natally? Do these placements turn on the other houses in your chart? Since my 7th isn't occupied, I don't think having their Venus in it would matter unless it was close to my descendant, right?

It depends on the house system. I agree with Saturn being in seventh, not eighth. Placidus puts it in eighth, various others, in seven. It seems more like a seventh house Saturn imo.

I have nothing in fifth but I do have family members I get along with better than others and they have planets like Venus and Jupiter in my fifth house. One friend I hung around constantly had Aries Venus in my seventh house. I get along with sun Gems, for the most part, they have their suns in my ninth.

SSS, I think you edited while I was replying

My 9th house is occupied by the ruler of my 7th, so that one WOULD get my interest! So perhaps strong contact in one of our occupied natal houses clicks in the area that's ruled by the planet being triggered? That seems to make sense to me. If that's so, then strong contact to my 6th house Venus would make my 8th house turn on or strong contact to my 4th house Jupiter would make my 3rd house engage. What do you think? Does this sound right to you?

I know, I apologize, I couldn't resist editing it because I didn't want it to sound like I was talking about friendship only. I meant a good sense of congeniality between two people before they decide to take it a step further, if they decide.

I don't trust my eighth house or my third, lol. Too much affliction going on in those! I've been through an eighth house Taurus sun/ my moon conjunct relationship, it was fun but kinda went nowhere. I don't regret it, it just wasn't very practical, not enough energy or something. Or, it was the wrong kind of energy? I was more like the worshiper who kinda just worshiped this other person who didn't really seem to require that, he just wanted to get closer. To me, he was like a rock star or something, lol, you know? That's how this eighth house relationship proceeded.

A friend I made while taking driver's ed had the sun/Jupiter in my first, among others, I had some of mine, including sun, around her MC and in the tenth, including my sun conjunct her Venus. We got along, hung out, went places together, etc, however, the clash of ideologies was waaaay too obvious and strong.

That's why I like to turn to my houses where nothing much is happening, like the fifth. I only vaguely respond to my natal twelfth synastry-wise, as well. It's very activated in the natal. Again, too much going on. It's scary trying to figure out what to do next and hope it's not the wrong move. That's what I find it's like with twelfth house synastry where the house is strong.

I have POF in my ninth house, it only has one square. Maybe that explains Gem suns?

My friendship with someone who had Venus in my seventh was kinda cold in some ways, but stable, which reminds me of Saturn, residing in my seventh, sometimes. We still managed to maintain our friendship despite the grump.

Another thought: Venus in the 6th is my chart ruler/ruler of my ascendant. Perhaps a strong contact to that particular planet from another chart would allow that person to turn on any houses that they occupy in my chart? Kind of like turning off the safety before you shoot somebody

I have the 4th, 6th and 8th Houses empty. If you don't count the ASC, the 1st House is empty too. I wonder what this means.

I have 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th empty. That does not mean that the themes of these houses are not relevant to me! For example, when someone has his luminaries in my 8th house AND aspects my 8HR Mars, i feel it VERY much! Actually i even think that my 8H is active pretty much all the time, i am really plutonic when it comes to digging deep and solving mysteries, occult stuff fascinates me and i am researching this field as well. So.. not sure. Maybe you have to combine it all with 1) rulers of these houses in your chart, 2) seeing what the natural ruler of that house does in your chart.

As for 7th i have asteroid Karma there, some may say that it's only asteroid, but really, if someone's Venus is there, i sense it with my gut feeling. And there it is.

I agree with Selene.
A house doesn`t have to be occupied to be important.
If the ruler is a very important planet in the natal chart, it will definitely play a huge role.

The 5th house stuff is hugely important to me, even though there is no planet in there.
Its ruler is Venus in Capricorn in 1st house squaring Pluto on the MC. Centre-stage.

However, it is true, that I am not too fond of people with planets in Taurus; or at least I am not too attracted to them.

The same is true for the 7th house; I mean, c`mon all I ever do is studying synastry, how can I say relationships are NOT important to me? They are all I ever think about apparently. Albeit in a pretty analytical way.
But yes VERY important.

There is no planet in there though, and I don´t feel like I relate to Geminis (my 7th house in Gemini) all that well.
But the ruler is exactly conjunct Sun in 1st house - again, important stuff, just not in the way the signbackground of my 7th house would suggest.

Hmm I'll have to look into this. I'd assume transits though of course. Like maybe your Venus hitting a transiting planet in your 7th? Or a transiting planet and your descendant?

I have an empty 1st, 3rd, 4th (except NN), 10th, and 11th.
