Oh there is one passage I just love in Street Without Joy. Its too big to fit so I'll just link a quote my specific favorite passage from the whole book:
http://husarblog.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/street-without-joy/

quote:

Nothing changed at the tennis court; the officers continued to play their set, the women continued their chatter, and the messboys their silent vigil.

Only the old sergeant had moved. He was now standing stiffly at attention, his right hand raised to the cap in the flat-palmed salute of the French Army, facing in the direction from which the bugle tones came; saluting, as per regulations, France´s tricolor hidden behind the trees. The rays of the setting sun shone upon the immobile brown figure, catching the gold of the anchor and of the chevrons and of one of the tiny metal stars of his ribbons.

Something very warm welled up in me. I felt like running over to the little Cambodian who had fought all his life for my country, and apologizing to him for my countrymen here who didn´t care about him, and for my countrymen in France who didn´t even care about their countrymen fighting in Indochina.

And in one single blinding flash, I knew that we were going to lose the war.

This line means so much to me. I remember when I was reading this book I felt immense anger so much it can literally be described as HATRED.

I wanted to literally get a machine gun and kill down not only the French Officers and Women who didn't care about saluting the flag but I wanted to literally to get a machine gun and mow down so much of the French citizenry back at mainland France for being so indifferent to their Soldiers who were "sacrificing everything" to fight the war and for France's prestige.

Indeed I also hated the Vietnam War protesters of the American War during this time period and I wanted to literally see them get all executed.

As I reread the book and saw this passage, this brings up so much memories. I remember when Heath Ledger died, my PE teacher when I was in tenth grade stated while its sad the actor died, he is VERY ANGRY the media pays so much attention to one actor but puts little spotlight to the Soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan at the time. He felt the media needs to give more spotlight to those who are sacrificing everything for the USA, not an actor.

I had a friend who grew up during the Vietnam War. He stated:

quote:

I admit also to being at that time blindly patriotic. So during the war I did support the war.I did not look critically at the way the war was being waged and considered the reason for it was to stop Communism. Also I supported the war as a reaction to the hippie anti-war protesters whom I considered to be treasonous and upon whom I wished a gruesome death.I was in college when Nixon and Kissinger ended the war.I considered their actions a betrayal of all those who had died and even perhaps cowardice.

FYI this guy was in the United States Army Reserves after he graduated from high school and during the remainder of the Vietnam War. So we HAVE a veteran here saying just how foolish he was to be so pro-war and to have paid such deep attention to the conflicts of his time to the point of blind patriotism. We no realized what ******* fools we both were.

In fact I noticed Post-World War 2 Pro-Military folks in many Western countries seem to hold this similar attitude. Esp. for minor bushfire wars tat are obscure today and only known by people who reads Military History as their past-time hobby such as the Indochina War (which I already posted such a complaint above), the recent Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Congo's revolution for liberation from Belgian. . I still remember a documentary of how ****** French Soldiers were to the opposition of the French people to the war in Algeria and how some French men even planned to commit acts of terror against the French populace AFTER DE GAULLE granted Algeria its independence. PLANNING to BOMB innocent civilians to continue a ******* pointless war!

I even remember a story in my American Civics class by teacher of how in a Community College one guy said he opposes the War in Iraq and suddenly a student in Uniform got up and punched the guy and than left the class angrily.

I really think the way Pro-Military people complain civilians don't pay attention to the war is DOWNRIGHT SCARY. IMO anyone who "Support the Troops" to the point they are obsessively reading everything they can find in a research on a current war being fought and bashing the media for paying little attention is a SOCIALLY AWKWARD and seriously needs to get a life. There's a reason why the news don't cover wars so much in detail and why civilians are "indifferent" to the war. No one in the right mind would want to listen to horror stories of the war and seriously young people should be having the time of their lives and older civies should be paying more attention to their current problems particularly on taking care of their families and paying the bills.

Not obsessively looking at every bit details of whats going on to the troops in the latest wars.

I'd rather have the current generation of young teens and adults be more concerned about the latest MMA bouts or who the current popular Movie Stars are or the newest game release, etc.

The Nazis rose in power because the German people obsessively supported the Military with zealous fervor. This even included LITTLE KIDS at 8 YEARS OLD!!!

Its completely abnormal for a teen or young adult to pay attention to war (unless the person has relative fighting the war). Even in the cases where a young boy has a father fighting the war, its really not normal if he pays more attention to the news than he does to the latest Football match or practicing on hitting the heavy bag.

Even more for adults who have FAMILIES to take care off!!

Honestly anyone who wants to hit someone simply because they are indifferent to the current wars and pays more attention to their personal lives or to watching the latest national Football games OUGHT to have his head examined by a professional psychiatrist and psychologist (yes BOTH!). It means they are investing WAYYY to much time into the military and needs to get a Social Life and other hobbies.

Anyone who wants even anti-war protestors killed simply for opposing the war SHOULD be locked up in an asylum because they have already reached retarded levels of Patriotism and Militarism (like the Germans did in WW2). Or at least be forced to watch Platoon and All Quiet On the Western Front.

As I read more about Military History in general, I 100% refute and REGRET ever wanting to get a rifle and killing the French Officers who were indifferent to the war (and esp. the French WOMEN <3). I furthermore regret 300% ever wanting to see French civilians get killed simply for being indifferent to the war.

I just feel just as remorseful the disposition I once had towards hippies.

I really now find it irritating how the Pro-Military kinds pay so much attention to current wars like the whole world depends on it and hates the civilian population for not caring. I esp. hate the ******** Double Standard that they bash civilians for being too STUPID for not paying attention to their country's "defense". Uhhh how is fighting a war in an area as far away as Vietnam to maintain colony exactly "defending your country"? How are American troops defending our freedom in the War in Iraq while FREEDOMS are being taken away by the government namely through the Patriot Act?

If these Pro-Military folks were truly sincere about defending our country and bashing the civilian population, why don't they PAY more attention to Politics (which AFFECT the future far more of the direction our country will go through than recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have?)?

Really teens and young men in their 20s should be having the time of their lives dating the next door cutie or watching the latest football (soccer) match, not wasting their time watching every new revelation in a pointless war in a far away country. Or worse yet worrying about being drafted.

I still remember a story from history class where my professor in US History told of a chilling story in which a college student was drafted into the military. His last words to his parents were:

quote:

Don't worry about paying for my college and withdraw whatever loans you have. I'm probably not going to make it out.

A young man in his twenties who should be having the time of his life, my US history professor stated!

Any adults with a life rightfully shouldn't care about a foreign war unless the draft is passed once again or they have loved ones fighting the war. Honestly its only just that they pay attention to plans for college for their recent daughter who graduated high school or to their recently born baby son or whatever responsibilities normal sane adults would have.

I promise myself to never ever let my future child to ever get as interested in military affairs as I was. Its simply not normal well in fact he should be looking at the local hotties in the neighborhood or she should be watching the latest soap operas. Its simply unhealthy.
