Maybe I need some really good books on astrology and synastry. Recommendations would be great.

I'm wondering...how important are aspects with a wide orb (say 4-8 degrees), especially when they fall in early or late degrees (for example, Libra moon at 29 degrees trine a Pisces sun at 6 degrees).

Anyone want to offer some input on this one?

Books on aspects ~ Sue Tompkins, Aspects in astrology. Has all the main planets in all the main aspects to one another [if that makes sense :/] and is a really helpful book for showing you to put some depth into your interpretations. If you have that one, you probably wouldn't need to get another although it's always nice to read other peoples interpretations.

Many books discuss the issue of orbs, everyone argues... the out of sign conjunctions are just as important as the same sign type but with out of sign aspects you need to factor in the difference of the expression of the signs. The Libran Moon trine a Pisces sun would differ from a Scorpio moon trine Pisces sun in "intensity". Libra would be slightly cooler, quicker to compromise on emotional matters, but both Libra and Pisces can be exceptionally refined, so this could be heightened.... more gracefulness, whereas Pisces/Scorpio would be more like one of those virginal goth types that get eyed up by vampires. Or they'd be the vampire lol.

Adam Levine [maroon 5] is a Pisces Sun, Scorpio Moon.

Justin Bieber has Sun in Pisces Libra Moon.....

Best examples I could come up with

But the trine indicates an easiness of energy between the sun [core self] and the moon [emotional self] even if the signs would normally considered to be "in conflict".

Do you think the same theory applies in synastry? I'm mostly looking at my chart and comparing it to people around me...

I have read that an aspect can exist with an orb as much as 8 degrees...do you know whether or not this is accurate?

Thanks again for your response and input.

I'll use an orb up to 10 degrees for a conjunction that involves the personal planets [including synastry]. Same for a trine, square and opposition. Sextiles I allow up to 6 degrees. 3 for a quincunx...

If someone has their Saturn 10 degrees from your Moon ~ you're still gonna feel it. Plenty of astrologers will use wide orbs, especially if they come from a psych perspective. It's the transits that need smaller orbs, and a branch of astrology called horary.

The tightest aspects will usually be the most obvious...

Ah, priceless information, thank you!
This changes how I will be looking at synastry charts (although I really know very little about synastry, except for the positive aspects).

Any good book recommendations for synastry, including family relationships (not exclusively romantic relationships)?

Question of orb is a much discussed topic in astrology.

For me personally? 5 degrees. Anything.
This way I am getting the focal aspects. (but event hat could be reason for debate ).

Thanks, Ceridwen!

I'll bookmark the link.

Yes, I suppose the orb discussion probably is one of those topics.

Synastry, the only one I really know is Jodie & Stephen Forrest ~ Skymates, which is mainly about love. I used to have a copy of Lyn Birkbeck's DIY relationships [or something like that] and that was quite good. I've got more on composites than I have on synastry ~ oh, there's Linda Goodman's Relationship signs!

^Thank you!

I have, or have had at some point, all of Linda Goodman's books (my mom had an old copy of Sun Signs and I picked it up when I was about 12, and couldn't get enough of her books after that, ha).

I believe I have a couple of original Love Signs that an ex-boyfriend found for me somewhere...gotta love Linda!

I'm not a book type person, but orbs for me are up to 7 for oppositions and conjunctions, about 5 for anything else.

And out of sign aspects count too! They're...complex, but pretty interesting too!
