I am curious as to how this aspect works in the natal chart. How does it function, what does it teach us, what sort of life lessons does it pose?

I have a grand cross involving Mars in Scorpio, Mercury in Leo, Jupiter in Taurus and Neptune in Aquarius.

I've been interested as people say it's a rare and powerful pattern to have in the natal.

Can anyone give some insight into how these work and how the planets composing it play an effect on the person?

Well the Grand Cross is a major source of energy in your chart, like the T-square. Because of the element of symmetry in this configuration, that energy has no clear outlet and tends to be diffused, contrary to the T-square.
I would say to analyze your Grand Cross you should start with your two oppositions. The Mars-Jupiter could indicate trouble because of impulsiveness and the Mercury-Neptune a challenge to recognize false expectations and delusions from realistic goals. But perhaps you can find a better interpretation for them than me who don't know you at all. Whatever the case, those two oppositions will be important themes in your life and your life lessons will be centered around them. The houses where they fall should show the areas in your life where you'll have to learn these lessons.
I also have a Grand Cross in fixed signs that I've been trying to figure out and with the above method I seem to be going somewhere. Perhaps?
Grand Crosses on fixed signs are supposed to be the most difficult to have because their tendency to maintain the status quo can cause inaction, which is bad since you have so much energy you need to channel it somewhere.
And that's all the insight I can share. I hope you find it useful!
