As I’ve become more interested in astronomy itself, I’m becoming more interested in what I call ‘naked eye astrology’. I get a lot of enjoyment from looking at the sky rather than computer generated maps. Of course this is more aligned to classical astrology, where there was no distinction between astronomy and astrology, there were no powerful telescopes, no computers, etc. There was a fellow here a couple years ago who was all about Trans-Neptunian Objects, and I know many of you are into asteroids, but where do I draw the line? I'm flirting with drawing the line with Saturn*. I think this has a value, because except for the luminaries, classical planets (and the signs they rule) have a day and a night dimension. I think this understanding is becoming lost, as well the day and night of the chart. * And excluding asteroids as well (I've never gotten into them) which while are within the orbit of Saturn are unseen with the naked eye. Of course, there are objects beyond Saturn that can be seen, and they're the stars...another thing that has been lost in modern astrology. I look up at the night sky and I see a musical composition...and wonder. It becomes so much more tangible. The constellations tell stories. I think the ancients knew more than we do...in certain respects. Mythologies (of one culture or cross-culturally) are powerful and I don't think arbitrary. Being an anthropologist (by degree) of course I'd say that. Naturally there are things you cannot see, but they're not objects, but rather angles and points. House systems have always been important. The Lunar Nodes have been as well, and to some degree parts or lots. Then there are the Lunar Mansions. These were important (foundational really) in most ancient systems across cultures. Again, they're almost entirely neglected/unknown. What say you? IP: Logged |

I like looking at computer generated maps, then going out and looking for constellations, stars and planets. I like to memorize the names of each one and be able to locate them and point them out. I was in Missouri earlier and could see everything at night where I was in a very dark area, without any reflection, one of those black out zones, I guess, because I have never seen so many starts and nebulae, not even where my mom grew up, which is a fairly remote location. ok...I'll admit that I have an iPhone app that uses GPS, gyroscope, etc...It's a point and look real time star map. But there are some planets/stars that I can always key into...there's Jupiter!...there's Vega!...there's Orion! But with or without that, I like to see what's rising and when...then tracking it as it ascends then descends. Like I said...it becomes so much more tangible. And being able to see the conjunctions with my own eyes... IP: Logged |

SSS: and do you remember back in the day...before widespread home computers or the Internet...when you had to use paper, protractors, and mind boggling formulae? I'd double check my calculations 3 times to make sure I made no errors. Then again, I began my interest in astrology in high school...mid '80s.IP: Logged |

I kinda giggled because you and I are on completely different sides of the fence here! I absolutely love computers. I wish they would have been around before my birth. I am a technology junkie, I can't help it. I have Uranus conjunct ascendant and it makes a lot of aspects. Is Uranus in your first or second house? I know you have Virgo rising. I have Libra. Maybe you do not feel it's energy so strongly? You have the Saturn trine, too, right? Saturn trine can give you a love for traditional, tried and true methods.

Yes...Asc is 5 Virgo...and Uranus is in the 2nd...and Saturn is conj my Asc.I guess since Uranus isn't in my 1st like yours (I have the dubious distinction of Sun & Pluto there) I don't feel it in the same way as you...but we both have that Uranus stellium...and my Moon is in the 11th. Tradition vs technology...I'm a bit schizo on that front. I actually work in technology, my phone and laptop are very up to date, but I have no car or TV, and would rather spend the rest of my days on an organic farm. IP: Logged |

Hmm that's strange. I thought you had Saturn in Taurus. Where is Jupiter in your chart? I can see why you are traditional with Virgo/Saturn in the first. IP: Logged |

Oops!...Asc TRINE Saturn...Taurus in the 9th house. Uranus, Jupiter, Mercury in the 2nd. Ack...to the original topic, I should stop talking of Uranus & Pluto, because everyone knows that Aqua is really ruled by Saturn, Pisces by Jupiter, and Scorpio by Mars ...only then will Taurus and Virgo not feel like misfits! What about the sun? It's in your first house conjunct the ascendant?I think Aqua is supposed to be the most high tech of the signs, maybe? Cancer and Taurus, can be very attached to their childhoods. All the Taurus suns I know love antiques and nostalgia. Virgo can be versatile since Mercury rules. Mercury takes on the colors of the planets in contact with it. IP: Logged |

Asc conj Sun? 9 degrees. I never thought of that being a conj, because I can be a bit of a hard a$$, and like aspects tight.Yes...there were the stone, bronze, and iron ages. I call Aquarius the age of silica...electricity, computers, tech. Mutable signs are chameleons...but as for 'taking on color' I also think my Cancer Moon makes me a bit of a psychic sponge. I feel and absorb the mood of all those around me. It's pretty tough. Attachment to childhood, antiques, and nostalgia...that's my Cancer Asc friend...totally. I'm too much in the present. I like to pretend that's Zen and all...but really it's just a short attention span. IP: Logged |
