Hello all!Recently, I was asked by a friend's boyfriend questions of "what exactly is astrology? what makes the arrangement of planets affect each other? How did ancient astrologers know what these planets represented and what effects they had on each other?" Could you give some inputs please? ------------------ Love is a Universal Language IP: Logged |

There are varying theories on it which I feel too tired to explain at the moment. Personally, I believe Jungian archetypes in the psychic ocean called the Collective Unconscious can go a long way to explaining how and why astrology works. But to understand ancient astrologers you'd need to know more about the magical worldview in which all things are connected in a certain way and have an affect on each other, especially in the as above, so below way. It would be really complicated to explain, however, and even if I had most would find it TLDR anyway. IP: Logged |

Pixie is right, you would need to look into hermeticism.Simply put, the ancients could easily have used empirical data to come to their conclusions. Through observation and without the entertainment we take for granted today, they could have put two and two together. "The shifting skies seem to affect Matthias /this/ way but they affect me another." As above, so below. As within, so without. The quickest way to get other people to realise the complexity of our relationship to the universe would be to say something like "How long have we lived on Earth as humans and not for lack of trying, still do not know the mysteries of our own oceans?" As above, space, as below, the sea. Both are largely black spaces we're restricted from exploring freely. We can turn this on ourselves, as within, the subconscious and as without, the conscious. Everything is a cycle within a cycle. We are trying to answer the question "Who made this machine?" while only seeing a few moving parts. Spirals... Within spirals... IP: Logged |

^Like they said, everything is one thing and the greatest illusion is the illusion of separateness. The biggest thing is still of the smallest thing. All we are doing is experiencing things or receiving dynamic perception from other things experiencing things, and everything exists together, so why wouldn't one thing influence another thing if they are jumbled together like that? But if I had to sum it up as easily as possible...I would say something like, "because lots of people believed in it and believed in it for a long time, their belief became large enough to vibrate back at them", because after all, we are all only atoms and what is one of the only thing atoms do? Vibrate. IP: Logged |

I agree with much of the above. Most of the planetary bodies are too small and too far away to exert a physical influence through gravity, and some of the planets don't have magnetic poles, so it is more of Jungian influence. Some Astrologers believe there is no influence at all--just a reflection of what we are, will become, and what will happen. As to where the knowledge comes from, IMHO, Astrology is very complex for mere obsrvation of behavior, so I lean more towards a collective consciousnes type of revealing to humankind. IP: Logged |

I see astrology as tracking reality. Anyone who pays attention will see the patterns. Astrology as we know it is just the culmination of thousands of years of seeing, defining, and corroborating patterns. Why the patterns exist is beyond me, but I'm guessing that just as all living things need various organs or mechanisms to survive, the spirit needs various spiritual forces to keep it alive as well...perhaps the planets are like various "organs" in the spiritual being of our galaxy. astrology is the study of how planets paired with the 12 zodiac signs effect our personality and perception of reality and behaviour. there are the 12 signs which are some kind of energy or force or something else which are made from 2 basic components, an element (air, water, fire, earth) and a 'mode' (mutable, fixed, cardinal) and pairing these 2 components together makes the 12 signs. i believe the signs are 12 distinct areas and do not blend into each other. maybe the signs are energy that naturally balance themselves out into 12 segments kind of like magnetism balancing out between north and south poles. the signs seem to be centripetal. wherever you are in the universe, you have the 12 signs centring on you. Because if mars appeared to be in taurus from when you were looking at it from earth, then if you were born on mars would that mean that you would be completely surrounded by taurus energy and all the planets would be in taurus? no, probably not. whats more interesting is that there seems to be 2 sets of the 12 zodiac signs on earth. there is the 12 zodiac signs, and then there is the 12 houses, which *may* possibly be the exact same as the 12 signs. although there may be other factors that make each house correspond to a certain part of life. but anyway there is 12 signs in our galaxy and 12 signs around the earth, which both are always centering around whichever point you are at. which is kind of confusing. now the planets. i do not believe they are connected to the 12 signs. they just affect you cooperatively with the signs. each planet's force on our brains and thus minds has a different effect that makes you feel a certain way. this type of feeling is not created by chemicals but by something else. maybe magnetism. or that jung ocean thing that they talked about above which i have no idea about but sounds interesting. so if each planet has a different effect i think that maybe the components of each planet might pull on different components in our brain and create the effect. like if a planet has a lot of iron in it maybe that will pull on different atoms in your brain then a planet that has a lot of magnesium or whatever. so the make up of the planet is potentially what creates it's effect on our mind. anyway when a planet is in one of 12 signs it takes on the characteristics of that sign. so if saturn was in leo it would have a fixed fire energy to it which would be paired with the feeling that saturn creates which is of responsibility and restriction. thats pretty much all i know. the logical way that astrology might work.
