In your experience, what have you witnessed that led to any form of self injury?

Mars square Pluto with Mars in 1st. if Pluto is in 6th watch it.

I have no idea why people do that. No matter how depressed I am I woul never cut myself. And my body doesn't look amazing. Its rubbish yet... I wouldn't do that.

Why mars in first? Why the 6th house? Is it because those are 'body' houses so to speak?

Imo moon and pluto seem very self harm-ish.

Yes. 1st house is body. Mars rules injuries of any kind. Pluto rules obsession. Mars square Pluto can make the person being obsessed or have an obsessive pleasure for pain. Pluto in 6th house afflicted by Mars can show self harm.
Another indicator would be Venus square Pluto with Venus in 6th and Pluto in 1st. Why? Venus rules beauty and Pluto obsessiion. Venus in 6th house is ill. While benefic for this house like Jupiter, afflicted by Pluto can give OCD. The person can become depressed and wants to detroy ITSELF.
Case:
Person: Nobody loves me. Nobody wants me. Why is that? Why I am not pretty?
Then comes self blame and the cutting starts.
Too bad I don't have Demi Lovato's TOB. If I remember correctly because of her eating disorder and depression she had self harmed.

Generally speaking, either trauma (or long term childhood abuse and/or neglect) or religion (either out of guilt or out of ecstasy & faith) drives people to that.

Astrologically, I knew a Scorpio that was horribly into self-mutilation, which doesn't surprise me for when Scorpio turns all Gray Lizard, it's just a more direct way to do what they'll do anyway. She had been abused and neglected as a child (I knew her when we were both teens in a special class for kids with behavioral problems).

But two surprised me. One was a Leo (though I don't know her other placements) who was deep into degradation and self-abuse. She was vain enough not to make her scarring herself plainly visible while clothed and kept that to a minimum but she actively sought to be sadistically abused to an extreme degree and I don't think it was for the attention (though maybe), but more out of misplaced guilt from extreme abuse in her childhood (blaming herself for what happened).

Another was a Libra (him I vaguely recall had heavy Cancer and Pisces placements) who went that way...he was manipulative about it using it to control others ("see what you made me do...") and seemed to thrive on pity believing people would do whatever he wanted as long as they felt guilty for what he did to himself and/or sorry for him (he was disillusioned, that tactic only goes so far and works just for awhile). Yet I do believe there was an element of misplaced rage and guilt similar to the Leo (and he, too, suffered extreme abuse as a child).

I knew others who did that but I don't even know their sun sign. Interesting enough I know a couple who did it in tribute to demons (they were messed up runaway kids) which I believe is similar to the people who whip themselves (sometimes to scarification) in a religious frenzy or even imitate somewhat (enough to leave scars) the crucifixion of Christ (examples), it's like transcendence of the material for the spiritual. I'd guess that was a Pisces placement.

But then there's also guilt, I've lost count of how many kids took to hurting themselves and/or attempting suicide because they thought they deserved it when they realized they were gay and figured God must really hate them. I'd guess the water signs would be the most prone to that but that's strictly a guess.

Btw, I'm not counting anyone who I think suffered a severe chemical imbalance in the brain (including those who didn't self-mutilate until AFTER they started heavy drug use which includes heavy alcohol drinking and/or regiment of psyche meds).

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) and self-injury are two entirely different things. I have a bit of (undiagnosed but clearly definite) OCD but I don't *do* self-injury and don't understand it myself.

I've spoken before to people who have admitted doing it and they say it makes them feel better, apparently it's cathartic to them on some level. Logically I understand that's how they see it but the idea of physically hurting myself, somehow making me feel better is nonsensical to me. I'm always like 'then I'd have a physical wound that hurts and still feel like crap emotionally'.

As far as the commentary always blaming this thing on Mars-Pluto, eighth house, and all that - I think Pluto and the eighth house and and Mars-Pluto aspects have been stereotyped so much as being associated with dark things that pretty much anything that isn't lollipops and roses is automatically assigned to them, which doesn't always make sense. Mars-Pluto is a theme in my family's natal charts - including my own - and none of us self-injure.

Am I considered unattractive by American standards? Sure, but I've never given two damns about it, because I still do alright with men anyway.

Not all people with Mars in 1st house or with Mars square Pluto self injure. I have this aspect along with Pluto square Moon, and don't harm myself but I do have a tendency to work myself physically hard.

My childhood was pretty rough, was force drugged- which made me feel "numb". I was 10 years old when one day I found that an accidental injury gave me relief. It went down from there, self infliction with razors, knives and needles. Lasted briefly and haven't had issues since. Once I was free from being force medicated the sun came out , I could breathe and feel, and was happy again.
I don't know which aspects caused the need to cut. Which planets or aspects deal with drugs?

Natal Mars in hard aspect to Pluto (potential for self-abuse)
+ Transiting Neptune in hard aspect to Mars (the triggering factor) or any other 'self-destructive' aspect such as transiting Pluto square or opposite Moon or Mars.

Shes a Leo/Taurus/sag with a sun/moon/Pluto tsquare I think this mercury too.

I checked out her chart bc I also had an eating disorder with some similarities in my chart. Ive been healthy for years now. And I never was a cutter or anything or into drugs like her. Just starved

I know a couple more people who had eating disorders with similar fixed tsquares

Often it is anger turned inwards.
Mars plays a strong role,

A friend of mine self mutilated, burned herself with hot water.

Aries ascendant, Mars square Pluto, Mars inconjunct Saturn.

And good observation Rosalind, she had Pluto in the sixth, never connected that to it.
