These are dumb, like REALLY dumb questions, but I'm still unsure what's the difference and purpose of a transit chart, a progressed chart and a solar return chart.

Also, can a person calculate a saturn return chart and prepare for that?

A transit chart is a chart that compares the placements of the planets on a specific day with your natal chart.

A progressed chart is your current chart for your age. For example you were born with your natal chart. And as the planets moved shortly after your birth your chart changed. The progressed chart shows the position of the planets soon after your birth. There are 2 types of progressed charts that I know of. One is to match up each day after you were born with the year of life you are at. For example the chart of your 3rd day of life would be your progressed chart for your 3rd YEAR of life. And so on. Another way which I find more important and evidently true is to figure out your progressed ascendent (which moves 1-2 degrees per year on average from your natal degree) and where that degree falls is the ascendent on your progressed natal chart. So this chart would be a chart of only one to several hours after you were born. So the planets don't really change positions but they do change houses. It seems to be accurate for me.

A planetary return is when a planet returns to the same degree and position that it was at when you were born. So a solar return happens every year. Saturn takes longer though (24 years?) so it is a more rare and notable event.

And yes you can calculate your saturn return. Just see when it returns to the same degree that it was at when you were born. I don't know how to prepare for it or if it's worth worrying about.

I saw a book in the Llewellyn Astrological Calendar that I might get.

It is called:

"Llewellyn's Complete Book of Predictive Astrology" by Kris Brandt Riske.

I hate when I don't know an author, though.

It does say that it explains "Solar arcs, progressions, transits, lunar cycles, and planetary returns. She also provides a basic introduction to horary astrology, the method used to obtain answers to specific questions."

Here is a link:

Really need to learn about all these things, as my program does many of them.

Thank you, soren, for taking the time to write all of that down! I like the way the second progressed chart is calculated and I'm going to see if I can apply it to my own!

Thanks, Ami, for the kind words.

Ellyn, thank you for the tip and link for the book. I'll check it out eventually.

Not dumb questions at all, I for one thank you for asking. The explanations were easily understood as well, and thank you.

A question is never dumb unless you already know the answer and even then, it's still not dumb because you might just need to clarify the answer. The only dumb question is the question you don't ask. We're all learning and none if us knows everything under the Sun.

I have that book, it was one of the first that I ever got when I started learning astrology. It's pretty good but you should make sure you branch out and read other books as well.

Well, I've been reading a good number of years, but there are certain things that I just never looked into.

Now that people keep asking me to do the Delineations for them...

It just seemed like a good way to start.

I have things on my program, like Solar Arc and Solar Returns that I need to get the basics on.

Of course, the Progressions I always use, because the simple use of Eclipses is so very accurate. I can always pinpoint Eventful Years simply by pulling out an Ephemeris. I just devised the method on my own.

Also, a good reason to ask questions, and if you learn, no question is a silly question.

I'm certain we are all here to help one another with that.
