Does anyone know any aspects that might cause a person to not speak unless spoken to?

Probably afflicted mercury or mercury in the 12th. Cap mercury also comes to mind.

I have mercury in the 12th and a lot of time I don't speak even when they speak to me lolol

It might depend upon the modality of the mercury sign too. Cardinal mercuries initiate the conversation, fixed mercuries let others initiate and mutables do whatever the situation demands. Does it work like that?

I do this. It's not out of docility or anything like that. I'm going to be honest, most people just annoy the crap out of me and I'd prefer not to interact unless I absolutely HAVE to - and by "have to", I mean I'm approached and spoken to by someone. I think it's Mercury-Pluto that does it, not Mercury-Saturn. I do have both of those though (Mercury quintile Pluto; Mercury sextile Saturn).

I have mercury-saturn opposition, and I most definetly usually only speak when spoken to. Furthermore, mercury is in the 4th house and saturn in the 11th house.

I am not usually like that, though I noticed that in the case of someone`s Saturn squaring my Mercury, I tend to go tongue-tied, even though I principally like the guy.

Mercury Retrograde perhaps? Mercury in Capricorn might also be a possible indicator. I've read somewhere that having Mercury in Capricorn can cause someone to not care much for small talk.

It doesn't have to be because of something.

I will speak only if I'm spoken to directly. If someone makes reference about something or ask a question that everyone knows I have the answer to, I won't speak, because they haven't asked me directly.

I have merc conj Saturn (out of sign) and merc square Pluto. I only speak when I have something to say but if you push me I will say more than you can handle.

Retrograde Mercury in Capricorn conjunct Saturn/Neptune and sextile Pluto

It took me quite a while to become comfortable greeting my co-workers every work day but I realized that if you never speak, people tend to think you're stuck up or rude. I just try to be polite.

However, there are days where I just can't be bothered to say anything. Outside of work/family/friends, I truly don't speak unless spoken to.

I'm most comfortable giving out information. I'm awful at small talk.

I agree with moonlightx, if you never talk or initiate a conversation, people think that you don't like them…
So I've build up a few lines you can always say to people to start a conversation, and then hopefully they will continue, and if not the conversation is dead cause I SUCK at small-talk:P

I'm usually very talkative at parties or a place where I feel comfortable, but if I feel insecure I will just put on my stone-face and not say a word unless spoken to.

I usually will not talk to other people unless they talk to me first. If I'm in a really good mood I will though. I think it has a lot to do with being a Scorpio Rising.

@Moonlightx..I suffer the same...I am also learning to be more polite and try to talk sometimes. I am rather one to one person conversation type. I can now start conversations, but get tired after 10 min....my mercury is rx conj sun/moon in gemini four house. I enjoy writing a lot as well.

Yah, it's hard for me to start casual conversations with people. Also Mercury in Capricorn here.

I have Mercury in the 11th house. Actually I have a stellium in then 11th house (Mercury, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus). Maybe that's why I have a lot of mixed feelings and inhibitions when it comes to social interactions(?)
