To me it's about disillusionment. Someone who resorts to such tactics is disgruntled and disgusted with their environment so their psyche develops this black magic safety net so they can feel empowered and vindicated. It's all psychological. I do not believe in any kind of "magic." People are looking for a way to function so they think this system of thought will make their life easier.
For disillusionment, look at Neptune afflicting personal planets, perhaps Mercury.

And I agree with SSS, outside of the strange experiences I've had which have validated certain, clearly neutral, forces of the universe. But 'Hollywood magic' is, well, Hollywood.

Pluto could be a factor, Saturn maybe? The planets that stand for dissatisfaction, morose and gloom? Afflicted, especially by Mercury, they can indicate someone in a state of mind that would contemplate summoning spirits who will take care of it for them.
It's a complicated grid of aspects to certain planets, the eighth and twelfth houses can give someone an interest in the occult in general.
You can look up the charts of those known for turning to black magic.
