Is that because Scorpio used to be ruled by Mars? But it's not anymore...

It is in detriment in Taurus and Libra.
It's because Taurus is opposite a Mars ruled sign, Scorpio. This means it is weaker in the signs ruled by Venus. It's not comfortable in her domicile.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars in traditional astrology. I follow modern astrology.

Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio
Venus rules both Libra and Taurus

Venus and Mars ruled signs oppose each other, so therefore, Mars is in detriment in Taurus, since it's in the opposite sign of the Mars co-ruled sign, Scorpio.

I believe Modern Astrology uses both rulers, whereas Traditional Astrology only uses the traditional rulers.

If you do not believe Mars rules Scorpio, then it isn't in detriment in Taurus. Generally, Mars is not happy in places ruled by Venus tho.
If you believe Ceres is the ruler, not sure how Mars works in her home because he doesn't seem to have much in common with Ceres. He is more about fire and Vulcan.

Thinking out loud...Taurus is Venusian...Venus and Mars are opposing energies.

SSS, slow down Let's focus on Mars. It rules Aries. Aries-Libra. There can't be 2 detriments. And who cares Taurus is ruled by Venus too

The way I understand it, each planet has a ruling sign, a detriment sign, an exalted sign and a sign where it's in it's fall.

edit:If following modern astrology, one of the books I have says Mars is ruled by Aries, in its detriment in Libra, Exalted in Capricorn, and in its Fall in Cancer.

I personally think even modern astrology is not quite correct. It will make the most sense to me when there are 12 signs, 12 houses and 12 planets with no co-rulerships.
Who's with me?!!?!

If a planet is exalted in a sign, (in this case, Mars) then it will be debilitated (in fall) in the opposite sign.

Mars is debilitated in Cancer, not Taurus. As Mars is exalted in Capricorn.
Mars is in detriment in Taurus. To be more specific, co-detriment - as Mars co-rules Scorpio, and Scorpio is the opposing sign of Taurus.

Beyond rulers and co-rulers and detriment and fall and what not...

Mars was the Roman God of War. It would make sense that Taurus would struggle in this place where terms such as Action, Directness, Initiative and Aggressiveness would be expected.

Everything that Mars tries to invoke, Taurus would be like "um, ya, I'll get to it..." :P But Mars in Taurus allows for a perseverance that Mars may not be known for which can be compared to the Tortoise vs the Hare.

Mars is a fiery active planet---it is exalted in Aries because it can express itself how it wants to.Mars in Aries is very action-oriented,take charge, impulsive, leap before you look---just very high energy. It is a very admirable placement,I wish I had it! Mars in Aries doesn't sit and ponder,it just takes swift action. It is a strong combo to have.
Mars in Taurus is slow and steady, takes its time, likes to sit and ponder. It may not have the super charged energy of Mars in Aries, but it does have its nice points---

Retro 9H Mars in Taurus opposing 3H Mercury in Scorpio. I like my Taurean Mars. Yes, I may have some difficulty breaking through initial inertia, but I don't quit. Also, I think it keeps my potential for verbal cruelty at bay. It trines my Virgo ASC which adds sensuality.

Mars is dignified in Aries. debilitated in Libra.
Mars is exalted in Capricorn. detriment in Cancer.
Traditional Astrology is based on elements, temperature and so on.

it's not detriment or debilitated in Taurus. but it is not rulership of Taurus, and so it has no dignity in Taurus. it's not weaker, it's just more contained.
