I am a Libra sun/Libra moon, Virgo Mercury. I have a packed 8th house (6 planets in 8th house) and looking back on the men I have dated, three of them had Cancer Moon and one had Cancer sun. Where does this Cancer compatibility come into play?

If your Sun aspects your Moon by conjunction, the moon will lend some "Cancerian" qualities to the Sun.

This is just like those who have Mars aspecting the Sun(by conjunction/square or opposition). It kinda lends a Martian nature to the Sun;as with Aries, the individual is very competitive and likes to "win".

Those who have Sun-Neptune aspects means that Neptune is lending its nature to the Sun, so these people will be very "arty"; creative,dramatic, magnetic and kinda in their own world. Much like Pisces Sun signs.

So, in your case, they probably were drawn to the "nurturing" part of yourself and vice-versa.

My moon is conjunct my sun...very close conjunction too. This gives a cancer effect?
