Can someone please explain how they work and how I do you calculate it.

Add one day to your birth date for every year that you are old. Although there are other ways it is calculated that is very popular.

I think of it as you might be born a New Yorker, (Natal) move to Texas. (progressed)
You take on some Texan (progressed) qualities, but will always be a New Yorker. (natal)

Oh so since I'm 18 then the date for the progressed chart would be December 8 ,1995? And do I put the current city where I am living at?

You can actually select it on the drop down menu on astro.com.

But, yes. Dec 8 1995 But still the place that you were born.

Also, I've read and noticed that events happen in lives when a major sign change happens.

I have a few examples but for one, my father died when his progressed sun was changing signs and something else.... Oh Venus.
Actually his sun was leaving Aquarius and his Venus was entering it.
