So, I was looking at a new way to interpret my chart. I am not asking for a reading, I just would like to discuss this chart. I have two planets that have 27 degrees, Venus in Libra and Mercury in Virgo. Both planets are exalted. I have read that high degrees indicates that the planet has a lot of the sign that it is in. So, therefore my Mercury has a lot of Virgo. My Venus has a lot of Libra. On the other hand, a low degree would mean the planet does not have a lot of the sign that it is in. My sun is 0 degree and my moon is 1 degree, both in Libra. So, my sun and moon do not have a lot of Libra. Could this be a way of interpreting someone's personality rather than the placements? The only other planets that have significant degrees are Neptune and Saturn, both have around 12 or 15 degrees. All other degrees are very low.

With Venus in Libra and Mercury in Virgo at 27 degrees, two planets in fire signs both at mid degrees, and a packed 8th house, would this give me an even balance of air, earth, water, and fire?

well who knows if that is true or not. someone with their ascendent at 1 degree aquarius rather then 28 degrees aquarius would have more aquarius in them then 28 degrees because their ascendent would have been in aquarius for much longer. and someone who has a planet at 29.59 degrees when it moves into the next sign an hour after birth would have less of that planet be less of that sign then a planet that had an earlier degree. as far as i know the signs do not blend into each other and over each border of a sign there is a solid new sign, so i dont know if being earlier or later in the degrees would make a difference in the potency of signs energy

If you go by decans the first 10 degrees of a sign would "be the most" of that sign as the first decan is ruled by itself, 27 Libra is the Gemini decan so it has a second sign influence.

Well if you think about it, the degree's and axis don't really exist, the closer a planet is towards the end of a sign, the closer it is to the beginning of another.

I've read that planets at 1 or 0 degrees are kind of like "babies" and in this lifetime the planets in those degrees are ones your soul is kind of new in experiencing. Like when a planet enters a new sign it is like a young child experimenting and learning this new place, where as a planet in the 29th degree is supposed to be considered more "mature" as it has already learned the lessons associated with that sign it has almost finished passing through.

Personally though i think the degree's are invalid really we're in 2014, a new astrological system needs to be developed. Ophiuchus and Orion are both in the ecliptic system and active in astrology as well as Cetus ..

If you look up what tropical astrology is based off of you'll understand that it doesn't have anything to do with the constellations aside from them having been markers in the sky for the degrees that represent the equinoxes/seasons hence "tropical", these markers were then given symbolic associations with the seasons and times of the year that they appeared in. Regardless of what constellation shows up on the ecliptic our relative position with the sun is what guides the seasons and thus our zodiac, despite this the fixed stars can still be taken into account in tropical by knowing their positions.

"The Tropical Zodiac, used by Western astrologers since at least 100 BC, consists of 12 equal signs of 30 degrees each. Each degree is divided into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds. This allows for a very precise calculation of the position of any planet. The signs of the Tropical Zodiac never corresponded to the material constellations because the constellations are highly irregular, none of which is 30 degrees in length and because of the precession of the equinoxes. The precession of the equinoxes is a slow movement of the fixed stars and the constellations due to spinning of the Earth on its axis. This causes a change in Tropical Zodiacal longitude of approximately one degree every 72 years.
The Tropical Zodiac is oriented to the Seasons. The Sun enters the 1st degree of the sign Aries on the Spring Equinox, when days and nights are equal. The Sun enters Cancer on Midsummer's Day, the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. The Sun enters Libra on the Autumnal Equinox, when again days and nights are equal. The Sun enters Capricorn on the Winter Solstice, when the days are shortest. Much of the meaning attributed to the signs comes from this seasonal orientation. "

So, how is it that a high degree means that the planet is almost in the next house and takes on the next house traits, but if it is a low degree, it doesn't take on the previous house traits? I have a low degree Jupiter (1 degree) in Gemini. Would this mean that I could have some Taurus traits? I have a low Sun degree (0 degree) in Libra, would this mean that I would take on some Virgo traits?

First of all houses and signs are different things so im not sure what you are talking about exactly. The signs do not blend into eachother if you are asking that and idk where you got the idea that if a planet is in late degree that it takes on traits of the next sign (unless you really did mean house?)

But I usually see people in early or late degrees of the SUN only taking on traits of earlier or later signs, but this is because of venus and mercury's close proximity to the sun since smaller orbit, so people whose sun is in like 1 deg gemini might have a higher chance of mercury or venus being in taurus, and someone with 29 deg gemini might have a higher liklihood of merc or venus being in cancer, and in that way they might display traits of the previous or next sign.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology. Someone else stated that if someone has a late degree Venus in Libra they will likely display traits of Scorpio, because it is almost as if the planet is in the next house. I was just wondering if it could be the same but in reverse.

Well, the Sun has a wide orb. It is going to shine forth more than most.

The earlier Degrees are the strongest. The last Degree is the last dying gasps.

When you are a twenty nine Degree, it is Anaretic, that's when things become rushed in the saddle and escalate.

Well, what about forgetting about the planets and just looking at the sign that is in the house to formulate an accurate description of the personality?

The Houses are usually where the action takes place.

@ Ellyn - what do you mean by the last dying breath? Is that good or bad? Potent or not?

I mean that that is where the Planets play out.

If you want to know about Relationships, you look to the Seventh House.

If you want to know about home, family/career, you look to the Fourth/Tenth House shift.

If you check out the Planet that Rules the Cusp Sign, it will tell you about those things.

That's Natal.

Also, if you look at what House a Planet is Transiting, it will tell you what department is being affected in your life, as well.

well is it possible to forget about the planets in the houses? Could just the signs in the houses tell enough? I'm just looking at alternative methods.

That's an interesting way of seeing things, although I'm not sure it's valid.

You can't *not* use aspects and houses in astrology. I don't know if someone will come up with a different way of "doing" astrology sometime in the future but for now, it's very clear: signs, aspects, houses - they all matter.

About a late degree planet: it does *not* have the traits of the next sign. Same goes for early degree planets - they don't have traits of the previous sign.

So your Libra planets are Libran, *but* they are influenced by other things, mainly aspects (very important!) and houses (the area of life where the planets express themselves).

You have a New Moon in your natal chart, fauxcoat (or maybe a Crescent Moon... But I'd tend to think it's a New Moon because the orb of the conjunction is tight).

You may find those links helpful: http://www.llewellyn.com/journal/article/2354

Here's a brief description of the aspects in case you don't know them: http://www.astrograph.com/learning-astrology/aspects.php
(You can find other things on that site as well, there are several links on the top right.)

Back on topic:

The only thing I've found about degrees (more precisely - decanates) is this (I agree with this):

quote:
The decanates are said to have psychological and physical significances and are related to the mind, body and soul.

0 to 9 degrees- This decanate corresponds to the physical side and relates to the body. When a person has many planets in these degrees they would be practical, materialistic and sensible. These degrees are very powerful. The 0 deg represents the beginnings and the 9th degree represents the endings and the physical aspects.

10 to 19 degrees- This decanate corresponds to the mental or the Mind side. Those with more planets in this decanate are said to be intelligent and concentrate more on mind activities. They are logical thinkers and are well-informed about the latest trends. Degree 10 represents new pursuits and degree 19 represents the peak of mental activity.

20 to 29 degrees- This decanate corresponds to the spiritual aspects of a person. When many planets or in this decanate, the native would be spiritually inclined. Some might have problems like addiction and self-destruction. Degree 29 relates to the spritual peak.

I think a 0 degree Libra Sun is as strongly Libra as you can get. It's highly symbolic of what Libra & the fall equinox is all about.
