According to this link mental illness is the result of strong neptune and 12th house placements presence in a chart and a very weak ego:

I am still trying to figure out the meaning of my ascending planets.
I would think planets conjunct the ascendant would have something to do with ego. My are in the twelfth so maybe whenever I am too egotistical, I make enemies of others? It works against me, creating bad karma. Jupiter there suggests I should use my ego to benefit as many people as possible. Justice is Libran and I am a strong believer in justice and freedom.IP: Logged |

1st house placement and strong mars. 10th house placement can also give a person some kind of strong sense of their own value, but it can go both ways. If they feel they can't assert in life anywhere it could lead to very low self-confidense instead, even though they know how much they are worth. IP: Logged |

I have Sun conjunct Neptune but they're in Capricorn and in the 5th house. I think my ego is healthily strong.------------------

For this, do all the planets need to conjunct the asc?
For example, my case of Virgo Venus, Mars, mercury with only mercury/mars conjunct and mars/asc conjunct. Or meaning all three planets conjunct asc? IP: Logged |

I feel my solar plexus becomes out of balance from time to time and I have been targeting this issue this year and my ego is stronger as a result and fluctuating less. I know I am very valuable but I also struggle with my ego and what you are saying resonates. I have sun and mercury in virgo in the 10th house and my mercury conjuncts my MC BUT My Sun opposes my moon and my sun and moon square my neptune in the first. BUT the ruler of my 12th is pluto and all my pluto aspects are VERY NICE.
AND
The ruler of my CHART JUPITER in the 12th conjuncts exact URANUS in the 12th and by 3 orbs my ASCENDENT. AND My mars is in LEO and has VERY NICE aspects. So you see good self esteem but at the same time my solar plexus struggles with boundaries and can be overly sensitive so innately my self worth is strong but is also prone to getting off balance!
