Not in the literal sense, but rather, their writing expresses more than they can say because they don't know how to say it, or some other reasons. Are there any placements for something like this?
I'm sorry if you don't get it, but that's as clear as I can put it.

When I was checking out my Intercepted Signs and Houses on that other Thread, it really had a lot to say about why those energies were blocked in my chart.

Can't speak for everyone.

I've read that having mercury in the 12th may indicate that.

It's somewhat true for me. When it comes to expressing emotions, I like to write more than to speak.

retro 12th house sag merc conj sun/uranus.

It's down toward the bottom, and it really explains a LOT.

I can definately relate. Things in my chart that I think may indicate this:

Chiron in my eight house of Gemini trine Aquarius Mercury in 3rd.
Mercury square Scorpio Ascendant.
and not many aspects to either mercury or my chiron.

Chiron in gemini or in 3rd can indicate some communication issues, as well as talents. Chiron is known for where you have deep seeded wounds and the ability to heal others. Personally I feel like I just communicate so poorly and am easily misunderstood, but I have blown people away with my writing skills to the point of tears at times.

Uranus/mercury hard aspect - your mind races faster than you can actually make words of it

Mercury Rx - usually a writer has this

eyes_like_pisces I have Chiron and Mercury in my 3rd and I can totally relate to this! I too sometimes amaze people with my writing yet deep down I feel like I can't communicate effectively and I usually feel misunderstood

I don't really have any hard aspects to Hermes (2H in Gemini (nor is he retrograde)...
But what I do have is:
Grand Trine, Hermes+Chiron+Ouranos (in air)
Hermes sextile Kronos
Hermes trine Poseidonas
wait...
so then what about Hermes opposite Hades?

I think I express myself better through writing and it's definitely more comfortable for me to express my emotions this way.

Sagittarius Mercury
Scorpio 3rd house with Pluto

I have Mercury conjunct Uranus in 11th and Jupiter in 8th house and I do find it generally easier to express myself in writing than verbally. It's like I have too many thoughts at once and have difficulty putting them in order. On paper it's so much easier, and actually has a clarifying effect.

saturn in third house
http://astrolocherry.tumblr.com/post/58671317941/saturn-in-the-3rd-house-the-padlocked-journal

^ this link is super accurate for me.

i also have mercury in sag, which i find goes both ways in that it makes me articulate half the time and the other half i stumble over my words, or say things that get me into trouble.

with this combo i often feel like ive never adequately expressed myself, im always chasing after my words- they run away from me-- even though people often tell me im very poetic and expressive- i have some contradictory positive communication placements in my chart as well- venus conjunct mercury is my tightest conjunction. even still, whatever it is i have to say is never good enough- its always on the tip of my tongue, but never all the way there

haha, signs of a true poet/artist. I feel that way when I improvise jazz, I often feel I don't quite say what I wanted to say even though people might remark it was good.

We are our own worst critics.

that's such a high compliment for me!! I know what you mean.. i have a very loud internal self critic, what with saturn as my sun's ruler i also related to what you said about having trouble putting your thoughts in order. classic sign of a problematic mercury imo
