The tertiary progressions are actually the monthly progressions, based on the lunar cycle I think, and can be used to narrow down WHEN a secondary progression (valid for the whole year) comes into full focus.

Ronald Davison writes in his book on prediction (might be a long time ago, but it is easily the best I have read on that subject except for the one on solar arcs by Noel Tyl and the one by Bernadette Brady), anyway he writes - like Tyl- that nothing of utmost importance come to pass, unless there is an exact aspect to the angles or Sun (I would add the Moon, too, though it might be more internalized).

He also writes that unless a tertiary progression (usually involving atertiary angle or Sun or Moon) also touches upon a radical (natal) or secondary progressed planet or angle, there will usually be only a minor incidence.

However if the tertiary/ monthly planet-angle-conjunction (1 degree orb at most!) comes into contact with a radical or secondary progressed planet or angle, THEN this might be the month the secondary progressed aspect in question gets manifested and actualized, in short *something* major is happening.

Do you notice that as well?
BTW astro com has tertiary progressions, but the Moon is usually wrong, as they don`t take its movement into equation, and you would have to calculate it manually depending on what day in the monthly cycle the event took place.

Edit:
The Moon usually moves about 12-13 degrees in a month (one tertiary progression), so as the cycle is approximately 29 days long, it travels a little more than 2° per day; but the precise figure depends on the precise duration of the monthly month.

Example from my own life.
My grandmother passed away last year and I think it should show int he progressions.

At that month my sp Moon had just moved over my SP DESC and was applying to conjunction with my sp Saturn, squeezed in between them. It was too wide off each of them to be called "in aspect", and of course, the sp Moon is quickly moving so not really valid for the whole year but just for that timeframe.

In terms of the YEARLY progressions I was having sp ASC on 8.57 Capricorn square sp Pluto on 9°11 Libra and n Pluto on 9°05 Libra.
It was very closely applying to the exact square (the aspect reached total exactness in september/ october).

Anyway this was easily the most dramatic progression I had that year.

This ASC-Pluto - square obviously was in play for the WHOLE year, and as a matter of fact is still in play, though slowly fading out by now (my sp ASC is on 9.48 Capricorn now, well over 30 minutes off squaring Pluto - still not out of the "danger zone" completely, but nowwhere as "acute" anymore; it will be totally gone by october - so you could say I am already in the aftermath of it, hopefully ).

Anyway so, how could I have foreseen WHEN exactly this ASC-Pluto-square would come dramatically to the foreground?

The theory is:
1) through transits of outer planets
2) through tertiary progressions (indicating at least the month, it would get into focus).

As for the tertiary progressions, they could not have been any more dramatic!

At the exact day my grandmother passed away:

TP DESC on 8.35 Capricorn
TP Moon on 8.20 Capricorn
(TP Pluto on 9.12 Libra)

So the first part of the "rule" is fulfilled, a tertiary planet on a tertiary angle, and interestingly the Capricorn-Cancer axis is often associated with grandparents.
In my case even more so as it involves my mutual house reception of 2nd (Cap) and 8th house (Cancer). (the 8th house in derivative houses, where 4th house rules the father and 10th the mother, is symbolic of the death of the paternal grandmother, if I calculated it right at least).

As for the second part of the rule, it was also fulfilled, though not touching a radical angle, but it was exactly conjunct the sp (yearly) ASC on 8.57 Capricorn.
It was also of course squared by the natal, sp and tp Pluto.
Could the symbolism be any more fitting?

It probably wouldn´t have been necessary to be such a complete mirror of Moon-Pluto-theme, but that it was, made it just all the more specific as to what would happen when.

As for transits they were also playing into this theme-complex exactly.

Goosebumpworthy actually. My grandmother passed away at 3:30 a.m., to the song of "My way" by Frank Sinatra, my Dad was with her and actually after having dozed off, woke up to be consciously with her when she was making her last breaths, so he knew it so exactly.

At that time there was

Tr Pluto 9.57 Capricorn
Tr DSC 8.37 Capricorn
Tr Moon 10.07 Libra.

So the Tr Pluto was of course aspecting all the progressions in my chart, and the Tr Moon was setting it off at EXACTLY that day and hour (ASC).

Where it gets even creepier is when you know my grandmother`s natal chart:

Sun 9.59 Cancer
Mars 9.03 Cancer
Pluto 8.27 Cancer

I think probably it is not ALWAYS that precise, but seriously the mirroring on all levels really astounded me.

Another example. The year my friend got married.

Her husband had:
----------------
sp Venus 9.15 Capricorn
n ASC 9.26 Capricorn

also:
sp Vertex 16.41 Virgo
sp Juno 17.22 VIrgo
sp Mars 16.33 Gemini

and:
sa Neptune 12.39 Cap
n Sun 13.04 Cap (which actually is not that great to be honest).

Anyway, the month and day thy got married he had
tp Vertex 16.22 Virgo

Even though there was not an aspect in the tertiaries, the tp angle fell right onto the yearly aspect of Vertex-Juno-conjunct.

This I found quite interesting, also in relation to my friend`s chart, as her radical/ natal Sun is on 18.21 Virgo

His tp Moon was on 13.07 Cancer opposing his pr Neptune-n Sun-conjunction. (12.39 and 13.04 Cap)

And coincidentally they picked a wedding date whihc had Transiting Sun on 13.34 Cancer.

And my friend`s natal ASC is on 11.19 Cancer

--------------------------

from her perspective I found one quite relevant aspect.

sp Sun 16.36 Libra
opposite
natal Moon on 15.41 Aries
(it was already separating, but marriage usually is the result of a process, started before).

oh and sp Vertex on 16.40 Sagittarius

That month she had
tp Mars on 17.32 Cancer
tp NN on 15.14 Libra

I think especially the tp NN was of importance here, on her sp Sun and the SN on her natal Moon.

the day they married, Transiting NN was on 18.52 Aries and Tr Mar son 15.52 Aries

It was also highlighting some synastric aspect as his natal Jupiter is exactly conjunct her Moon.
And his Sun squares her Moon by 2 degrees, while his Mars is sextile her Moon exact.

I will get back to you in July. TP ASC conjunct TP Uranus exact at 17' Libra which falls on my natal Venus at 17' Libra. TP MC is at 21' Cancer which is my natal Sun/Moon midpoint.

Wow! That sounds exciting.

Though Davison wrotes that only minor things might happen unless the sp and radical angles or Sun are activated. So I am definitely curious what is going to happen.

Speaking of myself, my tertiaries for June look rather interesting.

The yearly, secondary progression, has sp Sun on 6.08 Aquarius trine n DESC on 7.06 Gemini. Maybe not strong enough to activate anything, but at least it looks quite pleasant.

However, on 11th june I have:

tp Moon on 7.45 Gemini conjunct
tp Sun on 7.49 Gemini sextile
tp Mars on 7.06 Leo

Obviously this is conjunct my natal DESC at 7.06 Gemini (along with Draco Moon on 6.59 Gemini and my prenatal lunar ecclipse on 7.02 Gemini)

So seems I am going to have a New Moon next month; of course that occasionally happens. My last new moon in the tertiaries was on 23rd march 2012, on 9 Taurus, but not touching any angle of mine, or Sun or Vertex or anything that mattered.

Well I am also having tp Venus on 2.21 Gemini conjunct tp Avx on 2.28 Gemini then, but it is not aspecting any angle in my chart.

Though funnily I just see that transiting Moon will be on 2 Sagittarius that day.

Howevwer the fact that Tr Neptune on 7 Pisces is squaring my tp Moon-Sun-nDESC-conjunction doesn`t bode too well I fear

Cer,
I just checked the sp angles - In July, along with all that i mentioned before, the TP Moon is at 15 Scorpio, and it just happens that my sp DSC is at 15' Scorpio. HMMM

Ceri, for your research - the month and year i got married, there was not natal or sp angles affected, BUT tp Moon conjuncted tp MC at 19' Libra which fell on my natal Venus at 17' Libra
Tp Venus was approaching tp DSC but was 5 degrees away from exact conjunction.

Hi Ceri,

Great timing lol
I myself have been curious about TPs lately.

I was looking at the TPs for the day when I'll finally attend my dream esthetics school (June 4th) and the results had me excited like a 5 year old kid

TP. Venus: Taurus 7°
TP. ASC: Taurus 7°
n. MC: Taurus 7°

TP. NN: Scorpio 5°
n. IC: Scorpio 7°
n. Jupiter: Scorpio 9°

The sabian is very interesting:

Taurus 7-8: A sleigh without snow.
Independence of the will of the self from outer circumstances. Power to mould life upon the pioneer's prophetic vision.

This sabian fits so much for me.
I've been hiding under a rock for too long lol, so this will be a huge opportunity for me to gain some wordly experience and attain personal independance. It'll allow me to come out of my shell and blossom. I'll finally take destiny into my own hands and go after my dreams.

Its interesting though because I'll be studying Global Makeup Artistry at an esthetics/beauty/fashion school, and the TP shows a Venus-Asc conjunction in Taurus that falls on my n. MC. lol
Could it not just get any more clearer than that?

Additional aspects:

TP. MC: Cap 23°
n. Uranus: Cap 22°
n. Neptune: Cap 20°50

I hope this doesn't prove to be trouble lol.
I've read some negative things about Uranus/Neptune on the MC, but then again the Uranus-MC could point towards my attaining independence/becoming my own person.

Interesting it was indeed!
especially on 9th and 13th june. That was not bad for a prediction, I had forgotten about actually.
