My astro teacher guesses peoples rising signs immediately when she meets them, and I know that there are a lot of really, really good astrologists on here-do you all really believe in the validity of rising signs? are they really that accurate? ....I don't really feel like mine at all.

hmm I would guess Cancer or maybe Virgo?

I don't think the standard descriptions of rising signs are accurate...
When I guess correctly, it's due to a resemblance between the person I am guessing and someone else I know.. It's never on the basis of an interpretation like: "Cancer AC has long hair and nice eyes", or "Gemini AC is tall and thin" - That doesn't work for me.

I do think they are accurate and believe in them more than sun signs actually. I don't believe in guessing them - at all - you can get lucky sometimes I suppose but most people don't even know their own birth time so you're just shooting in the dark when you guess. I also don't 'feel' like my rising, but that is often because the rising is how others see us, not how we see ourselves. for instance, others might see you as shy, quiet etc because you have a cancer rising, but if you have a leo sun you might not see yourself that way. how others describe you is often not how you would describe yourself, and that is because of the rising 'covering' what your sun is

There are other factors. I have Libra rising, my birth time is very accurate but I don't look like a Libra rising with a prominent nose and eyebrows that bow up some, a little like a rainbow, creating the look of the scales. I don't have this feature at all. I am Libra like in other ways.

I also happen to have three planets conjunct the ascendant and a Neptune singleton in the second house, opposite the moon. I blame Neptune for mushing up my facial features some. Libra rising can be really attractive in the face or have the balance in the nose and eyes or both.
I think I look more Neptunian than Libran but the influence of Libra on my personality is pronounced.
Whatever sign your chart ruler is in and the aspects it makes can influence your rising sign, too.

I don't agree that it's the way others see you -all- the time. The AC is supposed to be the impression people get very initially, when they don't know you well.

Even so ... on first impressions, other things seem to be relevant as well.. For instance, Mercury - because Mercury rules the way we communicate with each other... and the planetary ruler of the AC..

Also, when a person has a pretty soft ASC like Cancer that won't ever cover up a strong Sun like Leo (dignified) or Aries (exalted)... imo.. So the person would come across as a mix of things.

completely disagree with this. any ASC, even a softer one like cancer/pisces can cover a stronger sun placement if, for instance the sun if afflicted or if you meet someone in a situation where that leo/aries whatever *has* to be hidden. where you meet people also influences how they will come across - we can't behave in a strict workplace environment for instance as we can in a bar, so that plays into it too. I work with a pisces ASC female with sun/moon/venus/mars in aries. I was stunned when I learned this because (due to our workplace), she is forced to be quiet. so, a strong sun/stellium = completely unnoticeable.

The Cancer ascendant with the sun person would be an interesting combination with both the sun and moon prominent. This person would most likely be well rooted in the physical world and day to day life.

I'd love to meet your astro teacher. It would be fascinating to hear what she thinks mine is.

Someone posted something similar on another board; that they don't "feel" like their Asc at all.

Its more than just descriptions; as people are differing in appearance and I think the majority of descriptions that one reads online favour Caucasian people. There is very little for other race divisions.

Check transits, check milestones in your life and correlate them to the Asc; do the milestone correlate to when a transiting planet was hitting an angle? If not, your Asc sign may be off by degrees-but you'll need a professional astrologer to rectify it.

Asc sign is not just about the "mask" you wear etc. The Asc plays a role in marking the "beginning" and "end" of life cycles and stages.

For instance; Pluto is transiting my MC now and ,unbeknownst to me, it started last year and my Asc degrees were off by a couple of degrees.

When I checked this to confirm this error,I realized that at the time that it made a conjunction to my MC angle,I was really immersed in thoughts of changing my life direction around and going another career path.

It was a very powerful realization that I just couldn't go on the same path as I felt that I was not doing what I really wanted to do.

Pluto tends to bring a total shift of perception; when you were going one direction, you now find yourself on a completely new path etc.

You can't miss Pluto if and when it hits an angle. You change course definitively and your new direction feels very much more "you".

Maybe check your vedic chart.
I relate to it more than I do my western.

My rising sign is the same, and I do see where it plays, but I never really felt like my sun sign.
Vedic changed my sun sign and it all instantly clicked and i feel a lot more "proud and confident" of my chart
