I've researched some...

What special role in a Natal chart does it have?
How does it affect the chart, and us?
Etc etc

Be as specific and descriptive as you'd like!

That's a great question, DeepFreeze. Great thread idea.

The way I think of the chart ruler is like a filter over the lense of a camera. It "colors" or has an effect on everything that goes through the lense. It will impact every "image" taken.

I'm Cancer rising, so the Moon is my chart ruler. Everything in my life is driven by my emotions. The Moon is the driver of the car or the pilot of the plane. This also makes planets that are in the Moon's sign of Cancer come into extra focus. My Mars and Mercury are in Cancer, so they are sort of like co-pilots.

All the other planets will have their share of influence, and some may have days where they are the main influence, but the Moon will have influence all day every day. There's never a time when it doesn't have influence. That's the main difference between the chart ruler and the rest of the planets. Another way to think of it is like a singer vs. backup singers. Sometimes a backup singer will have a solo moment where their voice comes more into focus, but the lead singer is ALWAYS heard. Their voice is usually the most important.

Another thing I think is very important is any planet that conjuncts the chart ruler is given way more influence than if it were just conjunct a different planet. Take my Pluto for example. It's conjunct my chart ruler Moon, so I think it makes Pluto extra strong in my chart, and since the Moon is my chart ruler, my Moon-Pluto conjunction may have more of an effect on me than if the Moon weren't my chart ruler.

So, someone else may have Moon conj. Pluto, but not feel that it's as big of a deal as a Cancer rising will. Same goes for any other chart ruler combination. A Libra rising might be way more impacted by a Venus-Pluto or Venus-Neptune conjunction than a Sag rising would. A Leo rising may be way more impacted by their Sun-Saturn conjunction than if they were a Virgo rising. So, I think the ruling planet makes the aspects to it more influential in the person's life.

Imagine... A compass.

Then imagine N that's usually coloured in red.

Your job - to go towards the N. (not that you'd ever reach it,just follow the lead.)

The main reference point, the meaning, the direction. That's CR.

Sun can trump CR, and vice versa.

Can someone help me out with the chart ruler thing?

Is it the ruler of the ascendant OR the planet closest to the ascendant at birth?

I have Leo ascendant but Mercury was the closest planet at my birth. I already know from using Pullen's Astrolog that I am Mercury dominant, but that's not the same as chart ruler is it?

Thanks!

Now would we use decans to find a co-ruler? Or is that getting carried away?

In that case, I would have the Sun as my CR and Mars as my co-CR. And that actually makes A LOT of sense.

Your chart ruler is determined by your Rising sign. This may cause some controversy, but your rising sign is more than just a "mask". Your rising sign is the very cosmic energy that has been incarnated in physical form. It is the "spark" or the light that divides the light from darkness and where that light has manifested in human form......which is you....

The first house is the house that sets up all of the other houses. These energetic "points" (Asc/dsc ic/mc vertex etc) are said to be like magnetic force fields. They're not "planets" but cosmic energies.

If you're (by example) a Taurus rising. That is the energy your body has incarnated in, and Venus would play a big role in your life. Even if other planets seem to dominate.

I believe the chart ruler helps you determine how to understand the world around you. They don't control you. But they "show" you

I think this has already been answered, but I am really on a roll today. I keep on giving my perspective.

When a planet is very close to the Asc,it is said to dominate" that house and thus,is the 1st house ruler.

I don't quite agree with this as much as I don't agree with the fact that when the Moon is in the 3rd house, it "dominates" the 3rd house and thus becomes its ruler. Nooo

The Asc ruler is the planet that is associated with that sign

Asc in Leo i.e Sun is chart ruler
Asc in Aries i.e Mars is the chart ruler etc.

I have Taurus Asc and "knew" that I had this Asc even before starting to read descriptions of it. How?

Pity I can't quote the author as I don't remember who it was , but the Asc is, as I read in her article, the role that you assumed in the family of your birth-given the circumstances around you.

If you have Aries Asc, it is possible that in your family you had to "compete" or "fight" to be noticed.

if you have Taurus Asc, like me, it is possible that money, material possessions and "having" things was hugely emphasized in your upbringing etc.

if you have Cancer Asc, you may have had to "parent" some of your family members and be the mother hen.

So since I have Taurus Asc, this is the mask I wear when greeting the world because, psychologically, the environment with my family(first meeting with the external world) made it clear to me that this the "face" that the world wants to see of me etc.

So the ruler of the Asc is Venus. Why Venus? Why not Neptune?

Because Venus has the closest association with all the qualities that my Asc sign encompasses i.e sweet, amorous, loves pleasure, hedonistic,peace-loving, creative etc.

Until another planet comes along that seems more aligned to Taurus,as the debate is ongoing, this is where I'll stay.

So what effect does the ruler have on me and how does it affect my expression?

The ruler- Venus- is in Scorpio

Venus in Scorpio(much like Venus in Aries) can find themselves wanting to derive pleasure from thrilling/dangerous experiences.

Whereas Venus in Aries seeks thrill and adventure and to "conquer" and do what has never be done on a physical level, Venus in Scorpio wants the "conquering" to be on a more deeply felt, emotional level.

Both may appreciate beauty for instance, but Aries Venus may appreciate the beauty of the trees, the grass, the sky. All that is external.

Venus in Scorpio may appreciate the beauty of the dark caves, the inner atmosphere of a dormant volcano, the creatures living on the deepest part of the sea level as well as those islands that are forming now. All that is unseen and very much "hidden" from others.

What makes Taurus Asc differing from a Libra Asc who may have the same Venus in Scorpio is that Taurus wants to "ground" the experiences of these things and not leave them in the realm of the unknown.

They want to "capture" them and bring them very down to earth.

So this means that Taurus will open a museum/exhibition where you can physically "touch" and see these things they marvel about and "experience" it first hand.

They may even direct a documentary with the themes so that you can "feel" being there and not just take their word for it.

Libra Asc, however, may only be satisfied with talking about it.They may write a book about it- romanticizing it greatly- and make you "yearn" to experience it.

But they usually cover it only from an intellectual point of view with questions of "what does this means?" "is it possible that the world could be coming to an "end" if such marvels are only beginning?" etc. They are more interested in having you "THINK" of the possibilities etc.

Well what happens if you have a 1st house stellium, and the chart ruler is in the 12th house? I posted a topic about this but only one person replied and the answer wasn't really satisfactory. Does this mean that all the planets in the 1st house manifest in the 12th house or reach their best expression in the 12th or what exactly? I'm so confused about this, because for someone who has Sun, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Mars in the 1st house, I don't feel like I have a 1st house stellium. In fact I alternate between deep extroversion and deep introversion very easily and I am intensely protective of my privacy... In this case, what is the chart ruler doing with all these energies?
