What are you looking for if you want to determine one's talent(s)? Trines? House position? Quintiles? 5th harmonic? MC stuff?

It depends on the talent...
music or the arts, the intellect, spiritual gifts, home decorating, finance.
Each planet has a talent associated with it. There are asteroid themes for talents.
You would have to be more specific with your question.

I was just wondering how you would procede if someone asks you to determine his talents based on his natal chart. Imagine the 16 year old son of your neighbour would approach you asking to look at his birth chart in order to determin his talents. How would you do that?

I think I would make the following steps (not in chronological order):

1. MC and his ruler and all the aspects to MC and his ruler
2. planets in the 1st
3. quintiles and bi-quintiles
4. 5th harmonic
5. geometric pattern like a Grand trine (inkl. kite)
