If both ascendants are defined by the sign rising on the east (and are defined using Earth's perception of the heavens) then why are they different from each other.

I am a Virgo Ascendant in Western Astrology (although not very clean) but a Leo Ascendant in Vedic Astrology--which fits better as I have always been one to cast myself in a spot light.

I understand Vedic astrology accounts for the continual tilt of the Earth...setting Western charts back 27 degrees...but the ascendant should still hold strong right?

Could someone help me understand?

I guess what I'm asking is...if the two systematic calculations are based off of Earth's eastern horizon--shouldn't the ascendant remain the same?

its the same reason you can be cap in vedic but aqua in western

the ascendent gets calculated from the constellation its in for vedic just like the sun does.

Yep. I mostly use the vedic zodiac now in my readings. I find it a lot more fitting than western.

According to Kapiel Raaj's books (he is a Youtube astrologer as well, KRS) he states that if the earth is titled 23°, then so is the zodiac in the sky.
All western signs therefore go back 23° in Vedic.

In Vedic I'm a Leo Sun, Gem Moon, Cancer Rising
In Western I'm a Virgo Sun, Cancer Moon, Leo Rising

Basically, Vedic is based on where the fixed stars are now which is where the constellations really are and western astrology is based on where they once were.

The reasoning is that western astrology adjusts for the origins of astrology because the idea is more closly linked to earth and its history, where as vedic astrology is more absolute.

But even still, vedic is also relative in the sense that the fixed stars are not truly fixed and assuming they are is erroneous.

In western astrology I am a gemini ascendant...in vedic I am a venus ascendant.

For me gemini makes sense because I had an upbringing characterized by astute learning and words, but I look more like a bull in the face and I am a little thicker in terms of musculature.

My advice is to average out the two.

My western Ascendant fits to a T. 100% spot on. And other elements of the chart too. Couldn't understand myself until I started learning my chart.

My Vedic Ascendant is so wrong-wrong-wrong/not me that I have a hard time believing in Vedic natals.

Regulus- the sun is in the same position in western and vedic astrology. the ascendent is in the same position. so is venus and all the planets. the only thing different between the two systems, is which sign each planet falls in, along with the ascendent. the ascendent is just a fixed point like all the planets (well it's fixed in the natal chart, but moves after birth obviously) so this is why, it is not getting moved or recalculated to a different region, it is simply being calculated its position in the sidereal zodiac. hope that helped, if you were confused still

I prefer Western, although Vedic has its place and is great for predictive Astrology.
