It has to do with being close to the cusp of another sign. For example one may have a very early Leo placement and someone has a very late Aries placement that can square each other though if closer to the middle they actually trine each other.

That's called an out-of-sign trine. Some astrologers disregard out-of-sign aspects, but most take them into consideration. It reduces the effectiveness of the aspect, in any case.

It just means you have a late degree leo venus and early degree Virgo Jupiter.

Out of element trines/conjunctions happen due to degree of placement.
