So I set this to my birth date and set the location as close as I could to where I was born to look at the sky map. It doesn't let you type in a city which is a bummer. I could see Leo coming up at the horizon (my rising sign) and I could visually see how close Neptune appeared to the moon (I have them conjunct). It was really cool to see it. The only thing that was off was that my natal Mars is very clearly in Virgo constellation (on this map) but every website I have ever used calculates it in Libra (at 23 degrees even). Very cool anyway... and fun to look at! http://neave.com/planetarium/ ------------------ “Most people would rather be sheep than stand on their own with antlers on.” IP: Logged |

That is because in the western zodiac, the signs arent representative of the positions of the constellations, but are labels for 30 degree sections in the sky which ended up adopting their names from the constellations that were there back when the names were designated. These 30 degree sections arent located where the constellations are but are based off of the suns position from the earth as in the seasons (capricorn the start of winter, shortest day, etc) therefore if you are using constellations as your compass, they have shifted some 23 degrees and are in different signs now. So youll see your placements about one sign backwards in the sky relative to the constellations IP: Logged |

Yep, this is it. The constellations were just road signs back when the signs were named. Now they no longer apply, physically. The Zodiac is about the Earth's relationship with the Sun - the four major points are at the equinoxes and solstices - constellations don't really come into it. But you have fixed stars' positions if you want to explore extrasolar bodies in a chart.IP: Logged |

Great explanations on why it looked off to me! Thank you! ------------------ “Most people would rather be sheep than stand on their own with antlers on.” IP: Logged |

I think if you hover over a point (a star, maybe) in the constellation, I think it says the name. Edit: Yep, see screen shot below: ------------------ “Most people would rather be sheep than stand on their own with antlers on.” IP: Logged |
