Houses can make a difference. For example, a Cancer Mars in the Fourth House can make him feel very protective of (and potentially vengeful for) his home and family (parents and relatives), Third House might be more his community, Seventh House making his first and primary loyalty to whom he marries as well as his kids, Ninth House to nation, religion, or cultural identity and so on. That's just a simple example.

And ASC (which would reveal the Houses the sun and planets are in) along with moon would also be helpful for this.

It's better if you post the chart because aspects and positions matter but venus in scorpio combined with mars in cancer may give a possessive and protective personality but as I said it would be more accurate if we look at the whole chart, I think moon is very important in personal relationships.
