I've read that that is the way to try to rectify a chart. If you know a lot about his life you can try to put the planets in the houses based on certain characteristics he had to maybe narrow down the ASC.

For example, I have a friend who's mother knows he was born between 8am & noon. I'm convinced putting Saturn in a particular house based on how he is a parent is correct because then it also puts his moon in the 5th which also describes how he is as a parent.

That's wonderful that you have this ongoing active connection with your grandpa.

This 'prediction' of his Asc is actually called rectification and an astrologer would need much more information about him, his personality, physical qualities, pictures, timing of important life events like marriage.

I know it's not 100% correct/reliable. But I think it's in the ball park.

Your synastry with him I would think would have some 12th house activity double whammys...and strong neptune contacts.
