Love songs by sign

Inspired by the various pick a song for a sign topics, I decided to go to the source. I looked for one male and one female singer songwriter from each sign that had a song that related to love. In so doing, I hope to allow them to teach us something about each of the signs in love, through their own experiences and feelings.

...and it ain't a half bad playlist, either

Aries

Layla - Eric Clapton (March 30, 1945)

You can't escape this song. Eric Clapton can't escape this song. He's tried. If you don't know the back story to Layla, go look it up. Two words... Pattie Boyd.

Hero - Mariah Carey (March 27, 1970)

Look, I could have this one all wrong. Even just staying with Mariah Carey, there are many choices, and there are no shortages of Aries divas (Dianna Ross and Aretha Franklin just to name two). Hero isn't even a love song... or is it?

Taurus

Show Me The Way - Peter Frampton (April 22, 1950)

I had Billy Joel here first, then someone suggested Baby I Love Your Way by Frampton. Great suggestion. Simple, earthy, Taurus. My own Mars in Taurus prefers this song, but it's really just a matter of taste.

Rolling In The Deep - Adel (May 5, 1988)

Honestly, I can't tell if this song belongs here or not. I'd rather have a love song than a love lost song. But it's a powerful, sensual, moving song, and perhaps it gives insight anyway. You decide.

Gemini

I Saw Her Standing There - Paul McCartney (Beatles) (June 18, 1942)

Sometimes basic is good to illustrate the point. Love is something that "happens" to a Gemini, not something they necessarily plan or seek. Sometimes they can see it coming, watching themselves reacting to it, even as it sweeps them along. Also note... I saw, I held, she looked...

Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks (May 26, 1948)

The lyrics here! All through the song, it's I saw, I heard, I went. Gemini loves with their senses first. "...with the words of a poet and the voice of a choir and a melody, and nothing else mattered".

Cancer

The Boys of Summer - Don Henley (July 22, 1947)

A little voice inside my head said "Don't look back. You can never look back." Right. Like that's ever going to happen for a Cancer in love. Once the claws get their grip on you, it's for life... or at least until after the boys of summer have gone.

You Belong To Me - Carly Simon (June 25, 1945)

So it took some doing, but I found one that fits very well. Enjoy.

Leo

Bungle in the Jungle - Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) (August 10, 1947)

The male of the Leo species is quite accustomed to the spotlight, but sadly lacking in the ability to write about his own romantic feelings. Please enjoy the tracks listed under rejected for Leo. I'm sure that Mick Jagger or Robert Plant will be considered finer choices than this by some.

I'm Your Baby Tonight - Whitney Houston (August 9, 1963)

Though not written by her (she co-wrote on only two of her songs), I'm Your Baby Tonight may have been Whitney Houston's signature piece aside from her cover of I Will Always Love You. Both show Leo qualities, generosity to those she loves in the former, and the fierce Leo loyalty in the latter. All with a small slice of drama and flair, thank you...

Virgo

Somebody To Love - Freddie Mercury (Queen) (September 5, 1946)

I work hard. I do the things. I just want somebody to do the things for.

I Hate Myself For Loving You - Joan Jett (September 22, 1958)

I leave the interpretation entirely to you. Don't agree with the pick? It's Joan Jett - Your argument is invalid.

More to come!

Part 2...

Libra

Fire - Bruce Springsteen (September 23, 1949)

There are many fine male Libra singer-songwriters to choose from and several songs from the Boss to pick. I chose this video in particular because the way he uses his Libra charms to seduce the audience while singing a song about seducing a hesitant girl. Enjoy!

Edit: two months later rewatching this... When you can achieve that reaction, using just a microphone stand and a stool, unshaven, in tee shirt and jeans, with a man playing an accordion to your right, you too will have achieved zen master Libra status...

Don't Speak - Gwen Stefani (No Doubt) (October 3, 1969)

First, let me say that I can't believe I'm picking a Gwen Stefani song. But I have to admit this is a pretty strong candidate... Peacemaker, avoider of conflict, lovers more likely to be friends, socially savy... It all has that Libra vibe.

On a side note, I remember years ago thinking this was a Madonna song for some reason...

Scorpio

Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman - Bryan Adams (November 5, 1959)

Intensity, intimacy... Have *you* ever really, really, really loved a woman? Really? Ok, I'm making fun of the lyrics a little. The ladies aren't... Really!

I Kissed a Girl - Katie Perry ( October 25, 1984)

I already had to use Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera... Please don't make me resort to Katie Perry... If I'm forced, I'm going to use "I Kissed a Girl"...

Nope. It belongs here. It really does...

Sagittarius

L A Woman - Billy Idol (November 30, 1955)

One of the posters suggested Jim Morrison. I can't really argue the suggestion. Morrison was a force of nature, and a fine choice for our Sag male. Idol, another Sag, doing a cover of one of his more recognized songs... I have a bit of a blind spot for the Sagittarius male, but my intuition tells me this is the right choice.

Fighter - Christina Aguilera (December 18, 1980)

(Honorable mention Better Be Good To Me - Tina Turner)

Sagittarius women are possibly the most romantic in the classic age of chivalry sense, edging out Aries warrior princesses for the honor. But while the daughters of Athena will play the damsel in distress, the Archer's daughter must show her strength and challenge her mate to match and excede it. Woe to the man who is found wanting.

Capricorn

Stay With Me - Rod Stewart (January 10, 1945)

This may not be a popular pick, to be sure. With Elvis, Bowie, and many others to choose from, I could have gone other directions. But somehow, the ladies always responded to Rod Stewart and his frankly degrading attitude, something I never completely understood. But it's honest, blunt, raw, and it works.

Promises in the Dark - Pat Benatar (January 10, 1953)

Those poor pretty little goat girls. They try to be brave. They try to be strong. Then someone comes along and melts that armor and gets to that lovely gooey heart. Trust me. It's not about the Benjamins, despite what you've heard...

Aquarius

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) - Steve Perry (Journey) (January 22, 1949)

No music list of mine is complete without Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, and Journey. I admit this one is a reach for this list, but I had to try. Those of you too young to never have heard Journey through analog, amps, and real speakers will never know just how great this band was...

Ok, the best Journey love song was probably either Wheel In The Sky or Don't Stop Believing. Steve Perry didn't write those. But my favorite rockin' Journey song is this one, that does boast a nod for Perry as co-writer.

We touched, we loved, we broke up, we went our separate ways. But I still love you and I'll be back if you need me. In a way, it's the counterpoint to the next selection.

Oh, one more honorable mention. This video is consistently named as the worst video ever produced. You may want to close your eyes, or watch it again for laughs...

Strong Enough - Sheryl Crow (February 11, 1962)

Torn between the basic need for love and the sign's need for independence, The Aquarius girl needs her man to be strong enough to stand alone when needed and stronger still to hold her when she wants to run away.

Pisces

You Were Born to be My Baby - Jon Bon Jovi (March 2, 1962)

Fate throws us plot twists faster than a team of Hollywood writers, but God has a plan. We'll be ok as long as we have each other... Heck, just watch the video. Music used to be fun!

Only Girl (In The World) - Rihanna (February 20, 1988)

Oh how low I have sunk... And I thought Cancer females were hard to find. A Google search of famous Pisces women turns up more adult film stars than singers. Rihanna didn't even write this song. On second thought, just skip down to the next section and enjoy Carrie Underwood singing "Before He Cheats"...

Really cool thread, Gemini Blues but...

Dude John Mayer wins best love songs of all time. "Your Body is a Wonderland" is still being overplayed. John Lennon, Avril Lavigne, so many great Libra singers.

I'm just teasing Springsteen was a good choice.

Some of the signs, it's so hard to pick just one. For me it's the Gemini women. I can't even find a place for Ann Wilson (Heart) here? Sheesh!

Oooh! These are some of my favorite musicians. Some songs I love...

Eric Clapton- Lay Down Sally, Wonderful Tonight(also about Patti Boyd). I don't know what it was about her, but between Clapton and George Harrison she has quite a few songs written about her. Donavan also wrote Jennifer Juniper about her sister. They must have the muse gene

Paul McCartney- I've Just Seen A Face, Let Me Roll it, Maybe I'm Amazed(written for Linda)

Stevie Nicks- Gypsy, Landslide, Rooms on Fire, Leather and Lace, Dreams, The Chain

Don Henley- Best of My Love, One of These Nights

Blondie- Dreaming, Atomic, Heart of Glass

Bruce Springsteen- I'm on Fire...he sings about fire a lot, he must be a pyromaniac

I am beginning to think that I'm going to have to soften my stance on limiting my choices to songs written by the singer. Leo is proving difficult, as are female artists in general.

Heh! Great minds and all. But to me, this is Dolly Parton's song. Yes, I'm old enough to remember it... Still, it gets honorable mention above!

Mick Jagger has to be the Leo male! I love the song Wild Horses, and Angie...although it's tragic it's such a beautiful love song. I can't listen to either of those without crying. They both show a very "fixed" nature.

Madonna is a Leo too

For Virgo, I was going to suggest one of my favorite musicians, Van Morrison. He covered a lot of songs, but he wrote a lot of amazing love songs. Sweet Thing, and Astral Weeks are at the top of my list of all time favorites. Also the song I'll be Your Lover Too, the opening lyrics are very Virgoan...

"I'll be your man, I'll understand, Do my best to take good care a you, Yes I will"

Beyonce's Halo is also amazing! Although it has more of a Pisces savior thing going on.

I was reaching the same conclusion about Jagger. And while I'll grant you that your selections are far better than what I was coming up with - Brown Sugar and Honkey Tonk Woman (lol!), I was never a fan of Angie. Wild Horses might be a good selection though...

Yes. My first choice for her would have been Crazy For You, but it wasn't her song. Failing that, Borderline or Lucky Star were my picks. Didn't want to be down to Like a Virgin or Justify My Love, and I'm just not up enough on her later stuff to find better.

Van Morrison is good stuff!

Joan Jett was practically a lock for me, and Somebody To Love was a good counterbalance.

Tori Amos is another Leo. She isn’t exactly renowned for her love songs though, is she. Her dominant planet being pluto seems more fitting and apparent as a theme in her music..

A nice Sag male one would be The Doors’ Indian Summer. but, something like 'love me two times' seems more fitting for sagittarius.

Justin Timberlake: "Mirrors" (finding your equal )

SCORPIO!

1* Garbage - #1 Crush: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=locBtYh90-0

"I would die for you, I would die for you
I've been dying just to feel you by my side
To know that you're mine"

2* NIN - Discipline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R_I2G_mWsc

"Now it's starting up
Feels like I'm losing touch
Nothing matters to me
Nothing matters as much
I see you left a mark
Up and down the skin (skin skin)
I don't know where I end
Or where you begin

I need your discipline
I need your help
You know once I start I cannot help myself"

3* How to Destroy Angels - Is Your Love Strong Enough?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVEsA6BSsWc

"Just one beat of your heart
And stranger than fantasy
I knew from the start
It had to be the place for me.
Someone that I would die for
There's no way I could ever leave

Is your love strong enough
Like a rock in the sea?
Am I asking too much?
Is your love strong enough?"

4* Peter Murphy - I'll Fall with Your Knife: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvUDS-xYNu8

"To the crowd to the world you were so dry
And with a token bird I made sent it to fly
Right to your side with a broken wing you sail
Oh like winter in July a barren river wide
I'll pray for the flood to wash on you it's here, I'll stay with you

It's here, I'll be with you, oh
I'll fall, I'll fall, I'll fall, I'll fall
I'll fall, I'll fall, I'll fall, I'll fall, oh"

And PISCES!

5* Smashing Pumpkins - Stand Inside Your Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nm4xv3firw

"You and me, meant to be
Immutable, Impossible
It's destiny, pure lunacy
Incalculable
Insufferable

But for the last time
You're everything that I want and ask for
You're all that I'd dreamed
Who wouldn't be the one you love
Who wouldn't stand inside your love

Don't understand
Don't feel me now
I will breathe
For the both of us"

Virgo male - Michael Jackson

Of all of his love songs, "I'll be there" resonates as a Virgo in love.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg2vMrDzoXM

And my favorite cover of the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27Aprx3Cdr4

“Most people would rather be sheep than stand on their own with antlers on.”

Yes, but there's this (Carry)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gzKwOcCOYA

Now, I believe this album is actually quite dark, but I interpret this song quite differently.

And this, off of the Christmas album- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riCoTRnkSXE

I met someone I loved very much on Christmas day, so I always cry when I hear this. *sigh*

For Saggie~
Nelly Furtado (a sag) 'like a bird' (I think that's the name of it)

Goes...
I am like a bird
I'd only fly away

Sag-Jim Morrison

Love me Two Times
Love Her Madly
Moonlight Drive
Soul Kitchen

to name a few, probably a fair amount of Scorpio Venus here though as well.
