These synastry aspects are covered pretty well in a small paperback attributed to Linda Goodman, Relationship Signs (but which was really written by Carolyn Reynolds after Linda's death from what I understand). However, one correction ... that book refers to 'squares' as any planetary position in 'square signs' or 'opposite' as any planets in opposite signs. Wrong. We don't use 30-degree orbs for any aspect. Aspects are geometry, not signs.
These synastry aspects should be measured as active only if within about 5* of exact or 6* or so for the luminaries.
First, it must be understood that 1-to-1 relating is not an equal playing field across all humanity. Some have far heavier karma in relationships in general and simply will have a tougher time, regardless of astrological specifics.
However, I will outline some of what I have observed directly, experienced personally, as well as learned from books...
1.) A *majority of positive, supportive aspects in synastry*. This means sextiles and trines plus conjunctions/parallels between harmonious planets;
At least one of these three following...
2.) Moon parallel/conjunct/contra-parallel/opposite/square Jupiter. This is one that helps overcome some stressful aspects and help maintain a good nature about the bumps of life between you.
3.) Moon ... Venus. Same aspects. Sextiles and trines are too soft or 'lazy' to do the job. All angular aspects are better.
3.) Sun:Jupiter or Venus:Jupiter. This brings energy and confidence. Same angular aspects.
---
4.) Mercury aspects that enhance communication. Some, like Lois Rodden, rate these higher than anything. Venus-Mars 'hot' chemistry is overrated. It dies off easily. You need to be able to communicate well or deeply involved feelings turn negative, hurt and then injure the relationship unnecessarily. These may involve:
a) Sun, Asc, Moon, preferably some flowing and angular aspects. Remember, angular means motivation/energy.
b) Mars if flowing or Jupiter.
Strictly speaking, I don't believe there are single 'relationship killer' aspects. But for many people a combination of two or more of undesirable ones can prevent it from happening to start with or make it burdensome or worse.
Those BURDENSOME synastry aspects are:
- Stressful Mars-Pluto aspects (opposition, contra-parallel, square, quincunx). This is a principle that also applies to the Asc.
- Stressful Mars-Saturn aspects (same...).
- Angular Uranus (opposition/contra-parallel/square to Asc/Moon/Mercury).
- Angular Moon:Mars, including parallels/conjunctions.
- Angular Moon:Pluto, same.
- Saturn:Moon or Saturn:Asc -- squares, oppositions/contra-parallels, tight conjunctions/parallels.
NOTE: remember I am not saying that having any of the previous BURDENSOME aspects are relationship killers by themselves, but contraindicate the relationship if there are none of the Jupiter aspects up top to overcome up to two of them.
By default there tends to be some type of Moon:Asc, Sun:Asc or Moon:Sun synastry aspects. We tend to feel we fit with those people often even when there isn't much else in synastry to point to a long-term intimate possibility.
So first, count up how many total synastry aspects there are in both longitude and declination. You have to do both. If you leave out declinations you are looking at only half the picture. How would you like it if a teacher looked at only half your test answers and graded your term paper based on that?
Count synastry aspects as positive if they contain any combination of Sun:Jupiter, Sun:Venus, Moon:Venus, Moon:Jupiter, Venus:Jupiter. The rest are counted as usual.
You need to see at least a clear majority of positive aspects. Otherwise nothing else matters. This is something that most people don't seem to understand. You cannot base a healthy relationship on only a few standout desirable or 'hot sex' aspects. At least not a relationship with legs.
