Kinda inspired by shyberrys topic talking about how dumb the whole masculine feminine thing is. I can't help but agree. Seems like astrologys descriptions of masculine and feminine are very repressed and archaic. I can see why symbolically venus is feminine while mars is masculine. Then why is libra a masculine sign and scorpio feminine? seems like it should be switched just from observations of real life people with these placements. Capricorn. How is capricorn more feminine than masculine.

And even going by the old timey descriptions of what feminine and masculine are... it makes more sense that air is feminine and earth is masculine. Chatty, bubbly, cunning, social. Seems more like feminine traits. Steadfast, reliable, quiet, strong. Masculine. If we are going to polarize the signs like that, then it should be a sign by sign basis, not all water is feminine etc.

I don't Know. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Old time descriptions is that air was about the mind and thus men, as men think, women feel. And earth was like the earth mother which can be steadfast, reliable, quiet, and strong.

Interesting about Libra, however...in a way it makes sense that its male because the judges and politicians are traditionally men, yet the archetype of justice is often depicted as a woman (such as the woman blindfolded and holding scales)...perhaps that's somehow linked to Lady Liberty where justice was seen in freedom and individual liberty (and "liber" of liberty is also a word for love and I believe sex which was essentially seen as ungovernable and often dangerous as a result).

Just observations of mine, not championing a viewpoint here.

Though while I'm at it I'll also throw in that as a general rule the "feminine" signs are seen as more "magnetic" while "masculine" signs seen as more "extroverted." That is, Scorpio tries to draw or lure what s/he wants while an Aries goes out and grabs it. And that's not seen as a gender trait...as an extreme example, Hannibal Lecter could be called "magnetic" and probably was Scorpio (and I don't say that because of his extreme character either the way some people will assume any cold blooded killer is a Scorpio but rather how he could get inside people's head so brilliantly and manipulate them to do as he wished) but in no way would he be seen as feminine, and likewise Scarlett O'Hara is, to me, the active Aries woman yet completely feminine (some would even say stereotypically so, though no wilting flower is she).

Of course there's culture...for example, in the United States the institution of slavery (and for a long time after) victimized strong males which forced women (who were dismissed as potential threats) to be the strong ones and that strongly encouraged an assertive woman to run their household (since it was dangerous for men to do so)...in contrast, white culture had historically created laws against uppity women as well as creating plays as "The Taming of the Shrew" so that white women were encouraged to hide any spine they might possess. Granted, these are cultural trends rather than destiny but it's there regardless, and in the US the trait is lessened with each generation (though still fairly strong).

And in other countries there can be all sorts of combinations (not just a 2D spectrum, mind you, but different in many ways while similar in others, in some cultures for example a man works but the woman is expected to control the home and the budget, that is she'll find it hard to be independent but once married he's expected to get HER permission to spend his own money!). Japan is interesting to me because they've learned that grace and skill are more important than strength in combat (it only takes a pound of pressure to slit an artery or, in some cases, stab through a heart) so that today more skinny but graceful men (though still well toned) are preferred and women don't seem (as far as I can tell) to be discouraged from excelling in various martial arts (including Kendo) though at the same time they seem to idealize innocence and girly girlness (I could go much deeper than this but in the interest of brevity I won't, though fascinating history of samurai women who defended the home while the men fought further away until the Tokugawa Period).

Libra, a masculine sign, ruled by Venus, a feminine planet. What up with that anyway?

The basic concept is masculine=extroverted and feminine=introverted, atleast that's the way I understand it. If you were at a party the people with alot of masculine placements would be more likely to approach you and start a conversation than the person who has more feminine placements. The signs are categorized as masculine and feminine because they mirror the male/female dynamic. The man initiates contact and the woman is receptive. That's why libra is considered masculine and scorpio is feminine. Libras are more outgoing while scorpios tend to stay back and analyze people.
