I don't understand the difference between a progressed chart and a natal transit chart and I can't find anything online that makes the difference clear. When should one use one over the other and why?

Transits are the current positions of the planets in relation to your birth chart. They are much easier for the layperson or beginning to intermediate student to track.

Progressions refer to 'secondary progressions' and are the transits of your first days projected onto years of your life in day-for-a-year fashion. So your Day 1 Transits are your Year 1 progressions.

If you are just learning the difference, just learn to follow your transits until you feel able to integrate them seamlessly.

^ in addition,

If you are trying to, lets say, get insight on whats happening with your astrological make-up relating directly to life's past, present or future, you can look at both transits and progressions together for that time.
