This question was asked by Moon Bunny on Linda-goodman.com. It is a good question. Any question is good question, by virtue of the fact that one has it. I hope I can answer this in a way that it is understandable.First of all, these aspects are VERY different. One can liken them to an orange and a pineapple. They are both fruits but these fruits have very different properties. The opposition is an aspect that seeks balance, but does not find it. This is due to the fact that the native is, always, on ONE pole or the OTHER. Think of a see-saw. You may be up or you may be down but you are not both up and down. To make this more practical, let’s think of a person who gives her time to a charity. The charity loves what she does for them. They ask for more time. Then, they ask for more and more time. The native may give and give and give. One day, she runs away. She turns her phone off. For purposes of the charity, she has dropped off the face of the earth. This is an example of a person operating on one extreme OR the other. Firstly, she gives and gives and gives. Lastly, she runs away, turns off her phone and doesn’t give anything at all.To further this example, our charitable native may feel guilty for running away. Hence, she goes back and gives and gives and gives. Then, the cycle repeats. That is the nature of the opposition. In addition, this how it feels to the native. One must consider Houses and Planets, of course, so I will add these to another example. Let’s say our native has Venus oppose Pluto. These natives can be obsessive in the realm of love. Hence, the native may spend all her time and effort chasing a man. Then, when she “gets” him, she may spend all her time and effort on him. Then, one day, she may decide she doesn’t want to be in a relationship at all and goes to a nunnery( just kidding) However, she may abstain from love, entirely for a period of time. At a later time, she may crave love, again, and the cycle continues. It is see-saw, see-saw, see-saw. In terms of Houses, I will give an example of an opposition between the 1st and the 7th house. In this instance, the native may swing between wanting a serious relationship and not wanting to be tied down, at all. Hence, there is an eternal struggle between commitment and freedom. The conjunction is quite different because it is not a see-saw. It is a melding. Think of a roaring fire. The two planets are so close that they may burn up each other. They are so close that they may have a mind meld. They are so close that the native may feel as if they have a symbiosis. A symbiosis is good with some planets and not so good with others. This makes the conjunction hard to understand.
Jupiter conjunct the Sun is marvelous. Chiron conjunct the Sun is painful. Pluto conjunct the Sun makes for a very strong person, but the person may be too controlling. Uranus conjunct the Sun makes for a brilliant person, but the mind may race in an unstoppable manner. Also, in this case, the father may have been unstable Saturn conjunct the Sun may make for great self doubt.Hence, each conjunction needs to be studied on it’s own. I await your wonderful comments, as always! IP: Logged |

Thank you Ami! This was wonderful. So basically an opposition is a never ending trade-off between 2 extremes. I only have two oppositions so I feel I don't know them very well. I do have an opposition between the 1st and the 7th house, and it is so true that I go from not wanting a relationship to wanting one so bad, but I am never fully content when on either side of it. It is almost like the grass is always greener on the other side kinda deal. About Conjunctions... I feel like I have even more questions about those, because they are in fact mysterious. I am most curious about 'odd' pairs of them. For instance, If someone had a Taurus Sun (something usually so stable) conjunct Uranus ( very erratic and unstable qualities), would the stability of Taurus basically disappear for the most part? You are welcome, my Friend. Yes, the opposition is exactly as you stated imo For any Sun, Uranus in conjunction makes it brilliant but there can be problems with stability, through no fault of the person. Also, the father may have been unstable. The very important thing to remember is ORBS. An exact conjunction is much, much more powerful than a 5 degree, for example. Every degree is really crucial! ------------------ Want to Read Simple, Fun,Sexy Articles on Astrology? Check Me Out, DUDE. http://www.mychristianpsychic.com/

Saturn/Neptune may make for a person who feels shut down in being creative and/or mystical. Do you feel that, S? ------------------ Want to Read Simple, Fun,Sexy Articles on Astrology? Check Me Out, DUDE. http://www.mychristianpsychic.com/

Good article, Ami. With the opposition, especially in synastry, I would add the keyword of "illumination" and "reflection".
I don`t have any oppositions in my natal chart between planets. I feel very attracted to Mr Sag`s Mars-Jupiter conjunction opposing my own Jupiter though (which is my chartruler). Now Jupiter-oppositions are not that horrible anyway, but the crucial thing about it for me is, that because he is so different, I can see through this reflection a part of my identity very clearly. His MarsJupiter is in virgo, my Jupiter is in Pisces. One of the first things I noticed in him was that strong physicality, being down to earth and apparently feeling very comfortable in his skin (literally). Which seemed like a very foreign world to me, with my PIscean surreal dreaminess, and head int he clouds and spiritual and all these things (I once took a test, where it said that my upper chakras were wide open but my basic ones needed a LOT of working on. which is actually the wrong way round). It was through meeting him that I sort of noticed that I had a body, which sounds weird, but the communication lines between my spirit, mind, soul and my body were not open at that time. Successively I arrived in my body and developed a feeling for being a physical being. Of course most probably the widish trine of my Venus to his Mars-Jupiter (at 4-5 degrees) helped, not sure how my Venus trine his Chiron (3 degrees) played into it as well. But thing is, it was the way he looked at me and perceived me as a physical being (because that is what Mars in Virgo does), startled me shocked me, surprised me and totally shook me out of my comfort zone. Like everyone should see that I was just an Uranian-Neptunian-head in the clouds being, not operating on a mundane physical level, and yes that includes sexual identity as well. so there was a big illumnination going on for me with that opposition. there is more attached to this opposition though (in terms of asteroids). The conjunctions, well we have quite a few ° his Sun-Moon-MC to my Sun-Mercury ° his Mercury to my Mars-ASC-Neptune-NN ° his Neptune to my Sun-Mercury (very widely, I usually do not count it that much, but the Mercury-Neptune is a DW; orbs are: 5°29 and 4°35)
The thing is conjunctions are not conscious. In the opposition you see the other planet clearly (like the Moon in a fullmoon!), but the conjunction is like a New Moon; there is a complete fusion, but you may not be able to really see it, and you can`t separate both energies from each other, they sort of become a "new one", a new combination of energy. Which is why it is hard for me to really describe the effect in our chart, other than I notice that I tend to draw a lot of his attention, which is sort of weird, as HE is the performer on stage, but I sort of stumble into the spotlight whenever we are in the same room, well he draws me there, sort of. lol It`s also very often that he spots me first. which is also weird. I should be the one, the one in the audience, to spot the performer, not the other way round! But by the time I notice he is there or around somewhere, he usually is already watching me. lol Or looking at me. Which usually is WHY I notice him, because I can feel the energy getting denser somehow, some sort of tingle. Maybe that is our conjunctions, an automatic response that can`t be prevented, because it simply is automatic. The orbs are reasonable tight as well, the Sun-Moon-MC to my Sun-Mercury from 25-28 Sagittarius. His Mercury to my ASC-stellium from 5-10 Sagittarius. his Mercury to my Neptune the tightest of them at 0°33, with Mercury ruling his 3rd house (and 4th and 7th) and Neptune ruling my intercepted 3rd house as well. Of course this is not an easy conjunction, but it made for some bizarre experiences. IP: Logged |

Maybe it could. I think with oppositions it can go either way, and then it can also see-saw. From my parent`s synastry though I see they have a Sun-Moon-opposition and they are truely complementing each other. HOwever I do believe three things have to be taken into account here as well: 1. Sun and Moon are naturally complements anyway 2. My Dad`s Moon is in 8th house (in Taurus), and my Mum`s Sun is in Scorpio, and there might be a subtle sign/house resonance for them 3. they have a few conjunctions, too ° her Juno - his IC (0°54) ° her Venus and Mars - his ASC (0°06, 4°14) ° her Ceres - his Vertex (0°12) ° her Jupiter - his NN (3°37) ° her Saturn - his SN (0°48) ° her Saturn - his Mars (0°24) ° her Venus and Mars - his Saturn (0°35; 4°56) ° her BML - his Uranus (1°24) the other oppositions they share are: ° her Sun - his Black Moon (1°19) ° her Uranus - his Mercury (4°15) ° her Jupiter - his Mars (3°13) ° her Chiron - his Uranus (2°39 - but this one is generational) ° her Pluto - his Vesta (1°45) ° her Jupiter - his Juno (1°43)
the major ones also have nice aspects attached to them, like my Dad`s Mercury trines her Venus exact and Mars widely.
and her Jupiter sextiles his Sun exact and trines his Ceres. So that make bring some balance (though they also have some squares attached to these oppositions, still, they are still in love after over 40 years of marriage, so I suppose whatever is there in the synastry, must have been enough)

my best friend and her husband have oppositions between° his Moon - her Saturn ° his Venus - her Jupiter ° his Jupiter - her Venus and Mars ° his Pluto - her Moon (4°00) Been together for 15 years, married for 10 with 3 children and a fourth being born around NOW. lol Very strong partnership, though it is clear they are quite different in *some* respects. But a lot of respect, acceptance and dedication on both sides.

This is just a personal observation, Ceri. My Moon is almost Unaspected. I feel very sensitive to anyone touching it with a hard aspect, such that I really can't seem to take it.My Venus is Unaspected and this may be even more sensitive. I could never be in a serious relationship with a moon square or opposition, I don't think. I think the energy of hard aspects to these planets are too much for me. Perhaps, oppositions to my Sun would not be the same. I have had this with Saggi Suns and Saggi Merc and they don't feel so harsh. What do you think, Ceri? ------------------ Want to Read Simple, Fun,Sexy Articles on Astrology? Check Me Out, DUDE.

Yes, I think that very often or even most of the times it depends on how our planets are aspected. However interestingly my Sun is pretty much unaspected save for the conjunction to Mercury, but I do have a thing for Saturn-squares to it. It seems just masochistic, but it isn`t. It`s like it needs that to somehow feel grounded. lol My Moon is pretty unaspected as well (I have a lot almost unaspected planets, even Uranus is unaspected. lol), but has that exact quinkunx to SAturn, which I experience as major actually. It does not do well with too much tension, however the Moon-Saturn-has to be balanced somehow, but it seems to make a difference WHAT planets. I seem to deal best with Sun, Moon, Saturn and Uranus making the aspects of another chart. Apparently not so keen on Venus and Mars completing this. I guess it makes sense though as Moon-Saturn are connected in my chart anyway, Sun is the natural complement of Moon, and Uranus disposits my Moon. Interestingly Pluto is a big draw, too, if in aspect to Moon and Saturn (I prefer the Pluto on around 17-21 LIbra though, rather have it trine my Moon and square my Saturn than the other way round). But maybe that is because Saturn is in 8th house and in Cancer, Saturn gives a Moon-Plutofeel anyway. Mercury, Neptune, Venus, Mars, even Jupiter do not seem to be any kind of draw for me though (in terms of my MOon-Saturn) my best friend`s Saturn opposes my MOon (and my SAturn squares her Moon) - it is absolutely wonderful and constructive. BUT we are not in a romantic relationship with each other, so that might help. No clue why Sun-Saturn-squares do not make me run screaming into the opposite direction though. I should be, but they feel quite positive to me. My Venus with her square to Pluto definitely expects some tension in synastry, and if the aspects are smooth, it just baffles me, and I am not exactly sure how to deal with it, but of course it feels positive, I just always expect something darker with Pluto, and when it`s not dark, I am simply baffled. lol
My Venus does not like oppositions though, neither does my Moon (except to saturn), actually none of my relationship planets is too keen on oppositions in synastry, except my Jupiter and Saturn. (oppositions to my Jupiter would most likely result in a trine to myVenus though, oppositons to Saturn might sometimes end up conjunct my Venus, or sextile my Juno) Oppositions to my Sun would fall into empty space (no harmonious aspects to other personal planets). Oppositions to my Moon would aso fall into empty space OPpositions to my Venus, if they are with a bit of orb (between 8-11 Cancer) might be trine my Jupiter (this s actually the only placement that tends to happen with the opposing degree of a personal planet). Oppositions to my Mars also fall into empty space (in terms of trines or sextiles to personal planets of course Interestingly oppositions to my Black Moon Lilith happen very very often, and usually it is either the other`s Moon on around 26 Leo-00 Virgo or their own Black Moon Lilith; but in this instance this would make for a trine to my Sun-MErcury-conjunction, and if on around 00 Virgo sextile my Uranus, which disposits my Moon. Aspects to my Uranus are not unimportant either, as it is on my 11th house cusp as well. And this Uranus does love oppositions. But again if an oposition to Uranus exists, so does either a trine to Sun-Mercury, or a trine to my Venus, so it`s all good

I made up a category called Semi Unaspected planets. I found that people with one aspect to a planet were very much like the true Unaspected planet. You have a TRUE Unaspected Uranus, then, Ceri, cuz the quincunx does not count. This is a true, true independent minded person who has great out of the box creativity. I love this one. Thanks. but it is Moon with its quinkunx to Saturn. So it seems that my Moon is unaspected, my Sun semi unaspected as well as my Mercury and my Uranus is unaspected as well. Well my Sun and Mercury are actually a duet. Moon unaspected. Uranus as well, though we could debate if we count the 5 degree sextile to Venus. We might, but even then it would be semi unaspected. lol the msot aspected planets are actually Jupiter and Neptune I think. IP: Logged |

Sure, Ami
I take the purists pov when it comes to unaspected planets, only considering the 5 major aspects. Some might not consider this unaspected for the outer semisextils and quincunx, for example, but I do.
