Not imo.

But I don't know how to manually

cast a chart-- I'm horrible at math.

And that is probably in my chart,

somewhere... my brain does not like

to bend that way.

now that we can e-mail letters do you ever need to pick up a pen to write to someone? technically, no. but, there are some instances when you might need to write to someone with an old school pen or pencil. same idea. you can get by without knowing the old-school way, but in some cases it might be helpful to know how, especially if you have a life-long goal of studying astrology and being in the field. if you are just a hobbyist, then it doesn't matter, it's good for professionals though, imo. not all computer programs are accurate and programs come up with various degrees all the time. you can verify astrology by hand if you know how; it gives you more options. imo you'll never make a difference in the field if you can't cast a chart by hand, it's fundamental for professionals. but not everyone has that goal.

my goal is to be a professional. unfortunately i do not understand it. the time's differences, sideral time, GMT time and UT time and all these differrent times and no clear distinciton between them confuses me. The math part i can handle. How do i read an epheremis? why is the sidereal time one hour different each day? for six days it can be in sideral time 0 hour why?? isn't sideral time 23 56 minutes in one day? its so confusing.

Back in the day, the heavens moved in perfect circles, resided in perfect spheres... We now know its not so. Gravity, elipises, warts and blemishes to the clockwork universe. Thus, the variance to the times involved.

I work with computers. I don't "need" to know the DOS commands, but it comes in handy every now and then. Nor do I need to know multiplication when my phone is a calculator... But it's nice to know... Same with learning to do the chart manually.
