Primarose220, you've not included enough astrological information/birth data for such a 'diagnosis.' A full chart is best.NOTE: a warning to get out of the way here ... Never ever sleep with a cell phone on anywhere near you, and NEVER by your head.
However, the Gemini tendency is for the nerve communication to be 'on' and the entire sympathetic nerve system to be 'on.' I recommend trying some simple slow deep breathing in which you gradually reduce and deepen the breaths until you feel a different state of mind come on. Maybe while listening to a guided meditation track or meditative music. Exercise is important to tire yourself out enough during the day so that the body is actually ready for sleep.
Sleep can only take place when the parasympathetic system (sleep, digestion, healing) becomes dominant. This ebb and flow between the two systems is a natural thing that should be roughly balanced in a 24-hour period.
Astrologically troubles with chronic insomnia relate to aspects involving fire/air planets [fire: mars, jupiter; air: merc, uranus] that are reinforced by the person's rising/sun/moon positions.
Fire planet because it generally involves a nervous system 'on alert' in which Heart Fire (as understood in TCM) or Liver Fire is not contained and flares upwards to the head. Mars emphasis is prone to over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system for action; Jupiter emphasis to far-reaching thought of what-ifs, even anxiety by always thinking big.
Air planets because thought is connected to the social world which is one of conscious operation, not easily submitting to the unconsciousness of sleep.
Uranus is the awakener, yet its tendency is not to submit to sleep and the natural dreaming state that can assist with this, but to look for the conscious Eureka! moment.
Mercury is the messenger, and there is always another message to receive and deliver.
It is not normal or healthy for people to live on just a few hours of sleep each night. This is indicative of a fire/air imbalance in the body which is often generated by inborn tendencies seen in the birth chart. This is not to outline an 'excess' of such-and-such as a basis for interpretaion. Many people with heavy fire emphases in their charts do not engage in workaholism or fall into other patterns of insomnia.
Many will say that anxiety is the cause of much of insomnia people experience, but if that is delivered by a rationale that leads in a straight line to an 'anti-anxiety' Rx, then I recommend caution. Check out other natural alternatives first: herbs, breathing exercises, changing your evening media input, etc.
There are a number of herbs that can be taken at the same time each night to ease one into sleep and have no side effects:
Passion flower for those with hyperactive nervous systems.
Hops flower for those who experience agitation and abundant sex drive.
Wood betony for those who tend to experience headaches.
Schizandra berries for those who need an astringent to tone up the body tissues overall, provide vitamin C for the adrenals and tone up the lungs, and/or alleviate the symptoms of diabetes or fluid loss.
California Poppy for summertime when bodies tend to run hotter and for Fire Constitutions who tend to run hot anyway; cools the blood while it relives insomnia, anxiety, pain, headaches, even fevers. If you notice feeling too warm at night or get hot easily when covered up this may be the one for you.
Gotu Kola for those who need to cool off the nervous system, support the brain and relieve skin conditions or provide gentle detoxification.
Oatstraw for nutrients for the nervous system/brain, and for those who tend to have under-nourished or weak hair/nails (as a constitutional indicator for the need for these nutrients like silica).
Chamomile flower for those who need calcium for the nervous system and possibly some carminative soothing effect to the digestive system.
Calcium itself is highly recommended for those who have highly active fiery constitutions because they burn it up so fast.
Amber powder is used in TCM to calm a weakened fire element when people may have trouble sleeping due to grief, troubled dreams, interrupted sleep, etc.
Valerian root can be used for similar purposes, but is also good for daytime use, and is more for the delicate constitution that tends to a body that chills easily or needs to cover up more.
Ashwagandha root is good especially for older folks or those experiencing structural/joint pains, arthritis; its first action is sedation, but it builds the blood and strength and is perfect for those who need fundamental constitutional support.
All these are best taken at the same time each night. If you've picked what seems to be an appropriate herb(s) and the first dosage level you try doesn't seem to work, then double it, but keep taking it at the same time each night.
