I have difficulty in learning, like i have never been school smart. I needed "special" attention in school and didnt learn as quickly as the other kids. I didn`t get something after just one explanation, very slow in that area of my life but with people, situations etc i can be very sharp. I feel so dumb but yet so smart at the same time, i feel so conflicted. I have two hard aspects to my mercury, both squares, one from uranus and the other from the moon, do you think this is the reason for my mental disability? IP: Logged |

There are different kinds of intelligence. Everyone can be smart at something, and not so good with other things. So the answer is yes. IP: Logged |

I just love that picture because i've been trying to explain this to some people! Intelligence and being smart has many factors and ways.

It's okay I have a hard time learning too. I have a high Visual IQ. I learn better by putting images in my head while I learn. But because of me being so visual I get distracted easily by movement. And I think so much about so many things at once that it's hard for me to concentrate and makes it easy to lose what I was trying to learn in my head. It takes a lot of time for me to study. When I was studying for the ACT, I studied for 5 months to get a 28. Sometimes I envy my sister who only studies for short amount of time and get perfect scores. Coming from a family that pushes you to do good in school, my parents think I'm dumb. However, just because people do so good at school, doesn't mean they're good at everything else. You're worth more than your test score. IP: Logged |

There are many learning styles and also types of intelligence as others have said. One man who amazed me is that he can do perfect measurements by a simple look whereas most would have to use measuring tape and even calculators, but he takes a look and then just gets to work and faster than anyone else he'll have a door the perfect size or a pipe that's a perfect fit. I sure can't do that...but he can't read, he's illiterate. In no way would I call him stupid, the guy has a lot of sense and good memory in addition to his amazing talent.I knew a musical savant who took special classes as his school work was so poor yet he could listen to music on the radio and within minutes able to play something real close to it on his guitar. Sometimes it took him awhile (especially if it required something extra like say a battery on the string to get the effect just right) but he'd always figure it out. And if a subject interested him then he learned it fast and read a lot more books than most kids as school did (that's how we first bonded, heck we first met each other in the fantasy/scifi of the school library). Once I was flunking math bad and I just despaired of getting it and sure I was going to fail that grade. So I went to page 1 in the math book and saw the mathematical processes illustrated...and it instantly clicked for me. In like an hour I was completely caught up and I went from an F student to an A and I was the only one who made a 110 on the semester exam (and also the only one to get the bonus question right) and after that the teacher had me tutor others. My advice to them was ignore the teacher, read the book...which worked for me but we have different learning styles. And here's something somewhat similar about Gillian Lynne, and I'm including where Ken speaks of her because he adds in how she (and others like her) had to "move to think" (and couldn't learn that well while sitting still). Starting from just after 15 minutes it goes to about 17:50 (though the rest is good as well): http://youtu.be/iG9CE55wbtY?t=15m5s IP: Logged |

Oh yeah, it's a funny story to tell in all its details but I'm not up for that right now. Long story made short (and without the funny stuff) I fixed a problem with a guys vox and phone in like 5 minutes that the guy had given up after several days...and he taught computers at a college! Though really I just looked up the instructions on the net and used some sense. Still, I gained a rep in that neighborhood in part because I was someone a computer expert paid for computer help though he knew a lot more about computers (and gadgets like what I'd fixed for him) than I did. Like i learn faster when stuff interest me but when it don`t it will quickly fade out of my mind and then someone needs to explain it to me a few times more and then i`ll get it. Alot of words too are "stranger" words for me so bc of this i can seem dumber bc i don`t always understand the words of someone but if they use it in another way i`ll get it. I was good in english though but i sucked in maths. IP: Logged |
