It wouldn't surprise me if a thread like this exists or has existed. But, I'm curious. What are your favorite types of music? What do you look for in the music you listen to?

What placements do you believe signify this for you? If you want, you could always post your "big 3" too.. But, I'd be curious to hear which specific placements in your charts you believe really resonate with the type(s) of music you like. Of course, you could mention multiple aspects, each one relating to a different type of music you have an inclination towards.

I wanted to start this thread, because music is a very important thing to me, and I am curious as to what kind of music my fellow LL members enjoy, and which aspects in their charts they believe highlight their musical tastes.

I can't choose a particular favourite, as the music i listen to depends on my mood.

I would think it would be affected by moon, mercury and venus. Music for me has an effect on my emotions, it makes me think, and i just enjoy it.

My big 3 - libra asc, libra sun, gemini moon.

Mercury - virgo, venus in leo

I'm not certain I made this quite clear.. When I mentioned the aspect thing.. I meant like.. Lets say someone has mars trine mercury in their natal chart, and they happen to like rap with a fiery sound to it.. They might relate their liking of rap with that aspect.

Does this make sense?

Or pretty much any aspect that they might feel shows up in their musical tastes..

ReadingTheStars95, do you have multiple Neptune aspects or/and Neptune in the 1st/4th/5th?

electronic music - Aquarius Venus, Sun conjunct Uranus, Uranus conjunct Neptune
orchestral music, choirs and occasionally female opera voices - Capricorn Sun, Libra Moon square Saturn, Venus conjunct Saturn
I prefer trailer/movie orchestral music and adaptations to classical pieces.
rock and metal - maybe Pluto in the 3rd opposite Mars and Mercury in the 4th
pop - Sagittarius Mercury and 5th house placements
r&b - Taurus Mars in the 9th and Moon in the 2nd (this genre smells like Taurus spiced with fire to me)
meditation music and morphed music (electronic and metal into orchestral, pop into rock/metal etc.) - Sun conjunct Neptune
instrumentals - Sun conjunct Neptune, Virgo ASC (I enjoy dissecting music)

I hope my comment is satisfactory.

Man, I enjoy all kinds of music. Probably my Gemini ascendant leads me to try all different genres/styles.

My libra placements probably give me the tendency to see beauty in all kinds of music (sun, moon, mars).

No matter what genre/style, it has to evoke something emotional and deep for it to be my favorite. Dark undertones are nice too, as long as its more natural and not pretentious. Most likely my Scorpio placements (Venus, mercury, Pluto).

Favorites: blues - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, jazz - Coltrane, metal - Alice In Chains, rock - original Funkadelic, alternative - Jane's Addiction, classical - Debussy....

I like jazz fusion mostly. And certain classical composers, eg the passionate, bold writers like Beethoven. Bach is also a must for jazzers. lol. As a musician myself, I was always try to play jazz first and foremost. If you can play jazz, you can play anything.

Commercially, I prefer old school soul and funk, but love good rock music. I also like latin house music, it's uplifting. I have a thing about soulful singers too, whatever the race/color. Without wanting to sound racist (as a white person), I find I listen mostly to black singers and jazz musicians, but there are some white rock singers that I really appreciate too.

I'll like anything if it's good, I'm just not into pretentiousness or self-indulgence.

Big 3: Virgo sun, Aqua moon, Libra Asc. But Venus is also important here, mine is in Leo. Not sure how my other placements would affect my tastes in music. Perhaps my T square (neptune, moon, venus - the jazz stuff), my sun trining jupiter (why I like uplifting and funky music). Sometimes my rebellious uranus/merc/pluto conjunction in Virgo takes over though and I play tons of punk stuff from my youth!

Probably my favorite groups ever: Weather Report, Steely Dan, The Jazz Crusaders.

I listen to all kinds of things.

Here's a list of genres I enjoy:

Some aren't included, like Shoegaze, dream-pop and glo-fi / domwntempo / "chillwave".

I used to be very into rock and metal (and their subgenres) but nowadays I'm more into ambient / electronic music, with an atmospheric vibe.

SoundCloud is the way to go!

Two of my favorite producers at the moment: haven & glo. Here's a track they made together. I find it very emotional, it gives me frisson ♥

Another one I greatly enjoy is Vacant (a bit "darker").

Other than that I often go back to listening to Deftones and A Perfect Circle, among other things.

---

Gemini ASC (the variety)
Venus in Libra conjunct Jupiter (the "soothing" vibes? love for music)
Scorpio Sun sextile Uranus/Neptune (attraction to the dreamy, atmospheric, "non-mainstream")
Mars conjunt Pluto in Scorpio (I guess that's the metal/rock part, ha)

Cool thread

Doux thanks for the list of musical styles, for reference.

Now I'm seeing how picky (and sheltered!) I am, because I would have selected fewer styles.

I like:

Some loud, harsh music, like punk rock, something like this Jawbreaker song, but not "Death and Doom" music.
-Capricorn sun square Libra Pluto and Aries Jupiter

Spiritual music, but it has to be awake, if you know what I mean. Something like this - Krishna Das.
I can't listen to ambient music, and I don't go for soft-flutes-in-the-jungle "soothing" music.
That usually irritates me.
-Pisces moon sextile Capricorn sun
-Pisces moon square Gem Mars and Sag Neptune

Poignant, almost whiney music.
Like the Cocteau Twins singing Tishbite
-Same moon aspects listed above.

Music no one has ever heard of.
Random indie bands, obscure stuff.
Things that make people scratch their heads and wonder if I'm crazy.
Young and Insane
-Aquarius Mercury square Uranus

Foreign music.
-5H Sag Venus conjunct Neptune

Religious music, even though I'm not religious.
-5H Neptune trine 9H Aries Jupiter

So I'll start off with music I don't like:

Country and the abomination that is Country Rap
Metal/Screamo
Electronic or whatever that EDM stuff is/Club music
Ballads or really slow, duet type songs; I get bored

I like:

R&B

Soul and Neo-Soul

Rap (and Hip Hop) but not today's rap; all types except for that gangster stuff; I can't take Krap seriously but Jrap's all right, sometimes

Funk and Motown stuff/70s black music

Jazz but not Smooth Jazz and other jazzy type music (So I guess Fusion too???)

Reggae, kinda; I like Sean Paul

J rock, American rock is all right...I like Paramore. I like Marilyn Mason, too, and some stuff I heard by Korn and Panic! At the Disco. Some of that 80s stuff is kinda okay too.

Pop is sort of iffy with me; it's either a hit or a miss. I like Britney Spears's first album and a couple of other songs. I think I like Jpop and Kpop more.

Speaking of foreign music, I tend to like it. I don't get why some people say they can't like if they don't understand the language that it's sung in. I don't care. If I like it, I like it.

I also like that 8-bit type of music or "video game music" lol. Like the Steven Universe music is what comes to mind.

I basically like my mom's and late grandma's music which is 70s-early 2000s black music.

Astrological reasons why:

Well, I have a Taurus ascendant, Venus, and Mercury r, and I've read that Taureans are music lovers which makes sense cause my mom really loves her music. (She's a Taurus Sun. So growing up, I listened to a lot of her music and developed the same tastes.) So I think this explains my love for more mellow music.

An Aries Sun and stellium explains why my music needs to have a beat, either laid-back (ascendant) or rhythmic/party-like.

My Neptune in the 9th house explains why I like foreign music.

I don't like ballads either. Duets are annoying, especially the ones that have a guy singing, and then a girl singing, and then they start singing together. lol

Oh. My. God. YES. I hate those types of songs, especially those sort of whispery types of songs. Ugh. I get that they're suppose to be emotional and heartfelt and stuff but I always get turned off by them. There are very few ballads/duets I can tolerate.

I just want to say.. I can respect your opinion. But, considering I created this thread, I would prefer that terms like "annoying" "stupid" or anything else derogatory not be used.. And, if a person absolutely HAS to use those terms, they may want to say "In my opinion, -this or that- is annoying" However, I think that the word 'dislike' is much more suitable.

I'm not stating that your opinion is invalid, rather I think the way it was worded could be taken as if though the opinion should be seen as fact, and I believe that to be offensive not only to the genre/composers, but also offensive to those who enjoy it.

And of course, I understand that opinions are not meant to please everyone.. But, let's try not to put any specific type of music/genre down. As I said, I think the word 'dislike' is much less harsh. Or, as I said.. If there ARE negative terms used, try and make it stated as if though it is an opinion, and not 'This IS'. Does this make sense?

I'm not meaning to direct this at just you, I am just trying to say that I would like for this to be a general ideal for this thread.

I will actually probably make a few different posts in this thread, as I like a relatively wide variety of music, and I am also interested in bringing in the aspects of even the musicians themselves, and to how their aspects show up in their music. (not saying everyone has to do this, but it is something I plan to do a bit of..)

Now..

I may not get incredibly specific with the genres, as I don't have an extremely great understanding of every single subgenre there is.

I beg to differ. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell is a great duet. Great chorus, great harmonies, great message, pulled off with class.

I will start off by saying this..

HIM is easily one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite band of all time.

I would say that one of my top favorite Genres is Gothic Rock. I attribute this to the fact that I have an 8th house Sun, opposite Pluto in Scorpio, with Pluto being a relatively dominant planet in my chart. (I'd probably say I personally feel it is around 2nd or 3rd..)

Of course, not to say everyone with an 8th house sun and such is going to like Gothic Rock.. But, I do believe Pluto has at least SOME resonance with Gothic Culture.

A couple of other of my favorite Gothic Rock bands are 'The 69 Eyes' and 'Charon' (especially the album Songs For Sinners)

Now.. The reason I like HIM so much, I think, is because a lot of their music deals with Love, Romance, and a few other related subjects. The thing is, their lyrics (in my opinion) seem to have a very Plutonian approach to romantic love. Kind of bittersweet. Kind of a darker approach to Romantic love and Sexuality.. For example, the songs 'In Joy and Sorrow' 'Vampire Heart' 'Cyanide Sun' 'Join Me in Death' 'Salt in Our Wounds' and 'Love in Cold Blood'

'When Love and Death Embrace' is probably one of my all time favorite songs by them.. That, and 'Salt in Our Wounds'

In Ville Valo's Chart, he has Pluto in Libra (of course, one of the major astrological signs of Relationships) and Pluto aspecting Venus. (among other things) I also believe his approach to love may be very slightly Neptunian, along with a stronger Plutonian energy. Personally, I also have a similar approach to love as he does, I would say. (Taking into account both his Lyrics, and his interviews)..

Now.. Why all this talk about romantic love and such? Well, in my chart, I have Pluto aspecting Venus, which Rules both my Sun Sign, and my Ascendant, and I also have Pluto aspecting Mars. And, I think that is what pulls me in to their music. The gothic vibes of my 8th house Taurus Sun, along with the Taurean/Libran longing for romantic love. Also, I think that part of my approach to love comes from the fact that I have Eros in Pisces. To me, this shows, that my approach to love and sexuality is that of total immersion into one another, becoming a whole.

HIM also has many other songs not directly related with love, that I also believe to resonate very strongly with Pluto.. Such as 'The Path' (I would recommend this song to ANYONE, even though HIM is definitely not everyone's type of music.. lol.. But, the lyrics are quite profound in my opinion.) and 'Sweet Pandemonium'

I partly attribute my liking of the lyrics of the last two songs to the fact that I have my Sun conjunct Chaos and aspecting Lucifer.

As I said.. I also like other Gothic rock bands that do not center their music around love.. such as the 2 bands I listed. One of my favorite songs from The 69 Eyes is the song 'Hunger' (however, that DOES happen to relate a bit with love.. lol. Although, it deals a lot more with the story of Miriam.)

(lmao.. And here I go.. Writing all of this about just one Subgenre.. More specifically, just a few bands.. lmao)

This will probably be my most lengthy post in regards to the genres I like.

I like all sorts. Maybe it's my mutable Sag being adaptable, and switching genres is like a type of travel for me. And perhaps that combined with my Leo ASC (and Libra/Scorpio) is why when I was younger I could go dress to country music one night and then a few nights later dance to gothic music and any who met me from the other night wouldn't recognize me unless I went up to them and told them it was me.

Cruxshadows has always remained a favorite even as their style has changed and evolved (the first time I felt compelled to buy music to listen to was after I snuck in to see The Crow when I was 11 and the soundtrack blew me away, as I didn't have much money all I could afford was a cassette of Cruxshadows which barely anyone had heard of back then and even got a free poster, probably because no one would buy it ). I probably should look up the astrology of the band as well as the singer Rogue as there's probably something there in that no matter how much my tastes change their next release becomes a favorite of mine.

Generally speaking beyond CXS, what I like the best depends on my mood, but is usually either darkwave (like Bella Morte), folk (like Dar Williams), or symphonic metal (like Nightwish and Within Temptation). And some days nothing makes me happier than the classics (like Chopin or Liszt). Yet nothing really gets on my nerves (save playing the same thing over and over again, or a song that is essentially repeating itself without variation every few seconds), and I don't like listening to the same genre all the time just as I don't like having the same cuisine every meal. Even when I don't like something I can often find something to appreciate about it (or at least the performers) mentally which is probably my philosophical Sag mixed with my Libra (creating an optimism that a weed in one garden is a flower in another) along with Scorpio influences (gotta add Scorpio when I can even praise Slayer despite that most of their music makes my ears bleed ).

And I recall how I loved glam metal from the 80s when I discovered it on YouTube and was just loving how over the top it was in every way, those performers really hammed it up in trying to be bizarre and/or offensive so that it was hilarious (and I got the impression many of them WERE trying NOT to laugh as they made their vids). As I was watching it I thought if I were of age back then I'd have loved to have been in a glam metal band...especially the part of laughing all the way to the bank after trolling fundies. That's probably my Sag Mars-Uranus.

By duets (and ballads) I'm talking more about those mushy love songs. The song you listed is one I like. It has a beat. I'm not saying I don't dislike ALL duets (or ballads), just the ones I happen to stumble upon--particularly in kpop--I haven't liked. The really slow, piano-like/guitar pieces. Basically I don't like ballads that are duets.

I understand your concern and I do not have any issues with adhering to the rules of your thread. However, please do not ask me if it makes sense. If I have any questions or concerns with your points and wish to obtain clarification, I will.

In addition, there are varying degrees as to how "derogatory" a word may be to different people. It is possible that a word is used by an individual because the individual believes that a particular word best describes what s/he is trying to convey.

I really like HIM's "When Love and Death Embrace" song, too. But that's pretty much it. Can't get into their other songs. :/

You should definitely give A Perfect Circle a chance. Maynard James Keenan is fabulous. I like Tool as well but much less, and don't know many of their songs. However Maynard's side project 'Puscifer' is also a gem (in my opinion).

My favorite album is Mer de Noms.
Thirteenth Step is great as well (it's about drug addiction and all that that entails; recovery; etc).
Their third album mainly has covers but it's also amazing. It has some "calmer" songs on it, more "soulfoul" ones... Like What's Going On.

By the way, MJK also has a Venus/Pluto square (along with Venus/Uranus, but wider). Mercury trine Pluto, and opposite Neptune. He's one of my favorite singers.

As for Deftones, I think my favorite is White Pony. Then Deftones and then Saturday Night Wrist. Some songs on Diamond Eyes I enjoy as well but not as much as their older work.
What about you, ReadingTheStars?
