I'm curious if anyone has experience with comets in natal charts, particularly comets that develop more than 25-degree visible tails. What orb would you use, considering that their tails could spread along an entire sign? Also, how would you interpret their aspects (or would you simply ignore them)?I read somewhere that their bad reputation comes from the fact that most comets we see escape Jupiter's hold and anything that is held back by Jupiter must be a threat. The one I'm interested in is a deep-space comet, with an estimated 500,000-year orbital period (for comparison Halley has a 76-year orbital period). Also on the day of birth the comet was conjunct Sadalsuud (a.k.a. Fortuna Fortunarum, "the Star of Mighty Destiny"), which doesn't seem negative. IP: Logged |

Well.. I think first of all, we should begin to look at comets, and find people who have close aspects with them.. And, see if they feel the comet has any impact..But.. I think there are a few unanswered questions that are keeping this thread from growing.. Which comets are you talking about? How do we find them in our charts? IP: Logged |

I was born a day or two after comet West (the so called Great Comet of 1976) became visible (search for WEST at astro.com). I literally just learned about it a month ago (my family didn't think it was worth mentioning ). I have no idea what it means or how to interpret anything about it. Obviously it's conjunct my Sun, orb 8 (it never got closer than 6 degrees of Sun). Still considering that its tail grew to 25 degrees (30 by other accounts) and it was visible during the day, I'm not sure what is the right orb. IP: Logged |

If you want to look out comets around your birthdays, here is the best database I was able to dig out: http://www.weatherfriend.com/astronomy/comet/cometlist.html You need at least a magnitude of 6 to be visible with the naked eye, but probably even a dimmer comet would be relevant. The lower the magnitude the brighter. Thank you, Seimei! I thought to do a comet birth chart for West, but I wasn't sure what date to use. The comet was actually discovered on November 5, 1975 in Denmark, on some pictures taken on August 10, 1975 in Chile. So do you use the November date or the August date? The interesting fact is that November 5th was a pivotal day in my life (I have half a dozen major events that happened during the last 15 years on that date; they seemed to be destructive, but in retrospect they always proved to be very positive, down the lines of destroying the old to build something better). Anyways, this is the chart for November 5th (the NN for this date is exactly conjunct my ASC): This is the one for August 10th:
