I overthink everything and it is driving me nuts.

I have Mercury retrograde in Scorpio conjunct Uranus. Could this be why? How can I stop? Maybe meditation? ?

I have Mercury trine Uranus and I suffer from a similar problem. I've recently started taking Bikram yoga and I have to say, the sheer force of mental determination in order to calm myself down to get through those 90 minutes has done wonders for my mental landscape. I don't think in such panicked, rapid notes anymore, and it's a lot easier to calm my thought processes. It can be a meditative class if you want it to be, so honestly.. yes, any kind of soothing eastern practice is the way to go!

I have Aqua Mercury square Uranus (1* orb) and my life completely changed after reading Eckhart Tolle's books and learning how to shut off my mind.

I don't fear depression anymore because now little spells of it hit me viscerally but not mentally, which cuts the suffering in half.

I will look into meditation, maybe take a class.

My thoughts tend to be negative. How do I make them more positive? I am tired of focusing on the negative. I feel I am going insane.

^^

Offhand, I'll mention that thoughts are habits, and habits are our default that are hard to change. What might work for you is self-hypnosis which is about getting your mind into a state of suggestibility and programming new thought habits, though this will take a long time before it takes...and you might also find it useful to divide the mind during self-hypnosis into different characters that represent different parts of you and try to start a dialog, and through that find the root cause of obsessive negative thoughts (that is where you picked up the habit). When I used self-hypnosis for something similar I had to do something along those lines.

Books on self-hypnosis are easy to get from the library. Get something generic, not one of those "self-help" books as those specific are usually not that good and I've seen a few that are downright counterproductive (and not surprising given that if they actually worked then the industry would collapse). Actually, I found this online:
http://www.wikihow.com/Perform-Self-Hypnosis

Of course you can hire someone to help you through it but plenty, even when qualified, are going to have an economic incentive to keep you coming back for more rather than actually helping you (some also become therapists for downright disturbing reasons). Some are good but caveat emptor. I'm glad I was able to to it for myself though it took awhile before fundamental changes took place.

This all aside there may actually be a valid reason for having negative thoughts, in which case the outer world (at least that which you can control or at least escape from) needs to be changed along with the inner world.

Heh I have a tendency to over think stuff too. And with an overflow of different thoughts jumping around at the same time, my brain is seldom at "rest". But I like it lol.

Mercury opposite Uranus in Scorpio (Rx).

I used to be like that. Probably why I enjoyed the mental gymnastics of debate and philosophy. I grew of out philosophy in my mid 20's as I found it was very circular and did not/could not discover the truth. Uranus in Scorpio will give you penetration and insight into whatever house it's in, mine was the 9th house of philosophy/religion and higher learning. Since your mercury is there, it's like a double whammy. You'll need to release the hold your thoughts have on you before Uranus will provide insights and 'understanding'.

I agree, meditation has helped me, but not in the sense of 'not thinking', but more from understanding how the 'mind' works.

OMG! I too have this problem! My Merc in Scorpio SQ Uranus. (yes and negative thinking as well)..

Here's what helps me-

1)You have to first of all recognise that YOU are not your mind.

2) your mind is only a computer. It's a tool for you to use. BUT it will just keep running. Unless you take charge of it, it will run YOU, causing all sorts of negative emotions to arise without your awareness..

3)This is like having an ongoing hidden energy leak. In fact this is what's really happening..your precious energy being wasted & going down the drain !

I find this awareness can snap me out of it...for a while. (hell! Who needs an energy leak!)

Overthinking things is counterproductive.
Doesn't provide solutions to problems. (In fact solutions are more likely to pop up when not thinking about it).

Give your mind a job to do. Jigsaw puzzles works for some..
Try meditation. Might work for you.(I lack the patience)

I guess ones mind is a bit like an unruly child. You need to be constantly present to supervise it or it gets up to mischief !
