I may differ from other Astrologers in that I think squares cannot be overcome. One can work around them. One can COMPENSATE for them. However, one cannot alter their meaning. One cannot alter their impact. Let me give an example. If one was born with one arm that was too short. One could exercise the muscles of that arm. One could lift weights. One could build oneself up into a buff dude or dudette. However, one’s arm will remain short.
I see the square as a permanent and “locked in” stance. I hate to use the word handicap because it is really not the right word, but for purposes of discussion I will liken it to the shortened arm. I hope you do not take this as the person is “bad” in any way. One’s chart is not one’s choice. Only God knows why each person has the chart he has. Hence, one must face the realities of his chart, in order to maximize his potential.
I will move on to this particular aspect—Pluto square the Ascendant. The Ascendant is one’s face to the world. One’s face may or may not reflect the depths of one’s soul(the Moon). It may or may not reflect one’s true ego/identity(the Sun). It may not reflect much about the person, in fact, but it will be the OUTER face. Hence, we can see the outer face, which includes outer mannerisms and even facial and bodily features, by studying the Ascendant.
Pluto is one’s primal passions. Primal passions may be scary to many people. To some fortunate people, they are as comfortable as breathing. I envy these people and I am not one of them. My primal passions seem to stay squished inside under a polite and controlled exterior *sigh*
For the native with Pluto square the Ascendant, she would have some version of the situation described above. For her, she may put her passions into a tidy compartment. More problematic for her is that she may not have access to them herself. They may seem like a crazy aunt locked in the attic, through no fault of her own. Pluto can be troublesome when he does not have direct expression.
One of my clients, with whom I had become very close, asked me if she could tell me something she observed about me. I gulped and said yes. She said that I seemed too nice and that did not seem real. That hit me like a wall of bricks, but it got me doing some serious thinking.
I was not allowed to be angry as a child. My mother existed one step away from a scary rage. I was not able to show anger. I had to make sure that I monitored all my actions so my mother could have the best chance of staying stable, if you want to call it stable.
I say all this to say that I was compelled to put my anger in a compartment.
When I got older, I could not get it out. It was not as if I left a suitcase in a “rent a space” and could neatly go to the space and extract it. The suitcase was buried deeply, as if in the depths of the ocean with cement shoes.
To relate this to Pluto square the Ascendant, this native has a suitcase of primal passions such as rage, lust, selfishness, etc locked in a “rent a space.” She feels she cannot show it to the world. That would be the essence of this aspect, in my opinion.
This native may have compensating factors such as Pluto trine the Moon or the Sun, which would greatly modify this aspect. The native may not. Hence, the whole chart would be needed to see the relationship of this aspect to the whole. However, I hope I have helped to shed light on this aspect for the sweet person who asked the question
