Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away
Ouran's Host Club

I enjoy some, but my sister loves it more. She has a grand trine between Moon, Mercury, and Neptune.

Spirited Away is one of my faves..A timeless anime classic that has inspired millions

I grew up watching shows like Yu Yu Hakusho (top 5 anime of all time) Gundam Wing (beautiful action and music) Bleach, and of course Naruto (I relate to Itachi so well)

I would also include Drangon Ball Z but EVERYONE knows that show lol

Spirited Away was INCREDIBLE. I plan on watching Yu Yu Hakusho when I get the time. One of my friends made me watch Naruto, but I could only barely get through episode 1...

I recommend Perfect Blue. That movie is INSANE. If you plan on watching, don't spoil it for yourself on Wikipedia like I did...

You have to bear through Naruto. Its a VERY long series that has been running for 16 years now and counting. It gets better once you get past the corny first few seasons. Are you watching Shippuden when they are older? Thats when it gets really dramatic

Yu Yu Hakusho is always a fave!!

I watch a lot of anime. I liked it when I was little. Now it still is one of my favourite things.

I like the ones which have a supernatural theme, or the ones based on folk-lores.

Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories.

Letter to Momo is a good one. It's about family bonds. I like that theme.

Jarinko Chie is one that has similar theme - it's pretty good too.

Hotarubi no mori e is my all time favourite. Slow-moving, bittersweet and oh-so-romantic - my 12th house venus screams in appreciation.

Asura - heart wrenching.

Mushishi, this series is pretty much in a league of its own. I know you said "movies", but yeah this one is just too good I can't help but to add it here. And each episode is a separated story (except for the occasional story that consist of two episodes), so...

I recommend this one. I love the manga, and was ecstatic when the anime adaptation came out. For the most part, it's slow-moving. There's a gentle, reflective "feel" to it. Offers an empathetic view on humanity. It's somewhat a refreshing, soothing balm to my more cynical side.

I was going to mention Hotarubi no mori e.. Although, I've never seen it. LMAO

One of those anime that I am extremely interested in watching.

12muddy, have you ever seen Mononoke? (Not the same as Princess Mononoke.. The show is simply called Mononoke)

I do not recommend 'grave of the fireflies' it was soooo depressing.

However, my husband says I am a jerk and told me to mention in here that he appreciated it even though it was a tragedy.

Grave of the Fireflies

Animes by Makoto Shinkai, dubbed to be the next Miyazaki (of Ghibli Studio).

Through the plots of his movies, I am guessing he might be a starseed. Try watching his latest one: children who chase the lost voices. And his anime has got one of the best graphics too.

Readingthestars, I think Mononoke is good. Thought-provoking and dark. I like the art/animation style of Mononoke. Make my head spin.

I love the stories. Remind me of the tales from Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. A wonderful feast for those whose taste is a bit "quirky".

Dead Leaves and Redline also are great. Very visual. They’re of completely different themes though.

Hypatia, I have watched those two. The Princess Kaguya one is especially sad. Nearly made me cry.

I think you would probably like Ponyo, it’s light hearted and funny (with a happy ending lol). The story is similar to Little Mermaid.

xD xD xD.. I was going to mention Redline in a post earlier, but decided not to. I found that movie to be very visually entertaining.. Lol. Personally, I didn't think the story was bad either, although, I know some people don't find as much value in the storyline as the visual aspect of the movie. Not an extremely deep story, but, I found it entertaining enough for what it was.

Sad but still felt uplifted by it and the graphics of nature were so impressive and beautiful and her character was great, I love her birth tale. I am very impress with the nature graphics, it's part of the reason I am enamored by Anime. I saw it with the subtitles and loved it. The little girl from the wolf children was a great character, adorable and brought a lot of humor. I am loving the comedy parts too, journey to the west made me laugh hard and the creativity was off the walls.

I saw Hotarubi no mori e, it was good but yes bittersweet. It reminds me of asteroid Tantulus bc is about that which is out of reach that you desire greatly but can't have. Well I have Tantulus square Valentine so I can relate. The Tale of Princess Kaguya is also bittersweet but what I like about both is that life is bittersweet and Manga is very good at portraying this as well as longing, pain and desire.

I see that Manga is very good at portraying hard work and its value also, I saw this clearly in Wolf Children and Grave of the Fireflies...

i'm watching from the beginning! THE EPISODE COUNTS ARE UNBELIEVABLE. I don't know if I have the strength to get through it. One Piece also has a very long run time. I think young Naruto is adorable, though, so that will be my motivation.

Yay I'm glad this thread was made.

I anime. I have some friends that do too. At first I didn't understand what they meant when they said you have to watch it in Japanese with English subtitles.. but after being forced to watch a season of a show like that now I totally get it and have to go back and re-watch them all in Japanese with subtitles. The Japanese voices and expressions just add a whole new dimension. The English voices don't really go.

That being said, Grave of the Fireflies is sooooo sad and depressing.

I think you'll like most other Miyazaki/Ghibli movies though,

Definitely Ponyo like others said,
Howl's Moving Castle, a personal fav
The Cat Returns
Princess Monoke
Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service

If you are also into watching anime series,
I highly recommend the Avatar: The Last Airbender series (Not the live action movie) as well as its sequel, Avatar: the Legend of Korra. Very spiritual and awesome

Inuyasha is GREAT and romantic and spiritual and cute and there are 7 seasons + 4 movies but make sure to watch it in Japanese. The English voices are really dorky.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood also great but make sure to watch the Brotherhood version which has a better storyline and follows the manga. (The first series made doesn't have "Brotherhood" in the title and the storyline though similar is lacking and inferior)

I've also been recommended Ranma 1/2 and Mushishi for series.

Currently rewatching all the original uncut Sailor Moon in Japanese and they are so different than I remember. Want to make a thread about it, but I'm really bad at thread tending. I really like how much the characters behave like their planets

Thank you so much for all your wonderful carefully crafted and thought out input! I will follow up with recommendations, I totally agree about the language dimension and also prefer the subtitles.
