Hello. This is a question that's been swirling around for me for some time - I'm still not entirely sure what I want to ask. I've also tried searching for other discussions but there aren't that many, this may be because I'm a rubbish searcher or maybe it's a foregone conclusion... not sure which one!

So, here goes (thanks in advance to anyone who bears with me on this...!)

I'm a Cancer Sun with Leo Rising. I basically became interested in astrology because I started reading internet horoscopes. As a result I got into the habit of thinking in 'sun sign' houses - eg Capricorn as my 7H, because it's opposite my Sun, Cancer as my first, Libra as my 4H and so on. Then I read up some more, found astrodienst and started playing with charts. Then I poked around a bit and ended up on here, (which, by the by, is very interesting and helpful - thanks!) where so far as I can gather everyone just goes with natal houses.

I get that any public astrologer is going to go with Sun sign houses, because they're easier to write for everyone. I've also realised that, whilst horoscopes'll usually flag up if something 'big' is coming, they're very rarely right on what it's about, or which area of life it hits.

Anyway, the upshot is that I'm trying to recalibrate my understanding of past events in my life from sun sign houses to natals, this is a bit discombobulating.

(Just as an example to illustrate why I'm finding this difficult, I met my Nemesis (a Cap) when Pluto entered Capricorn at the end of 2008 (internet astrologers: "Seventh house! Power and control issues in partnerships!").
Actually, according to my natal, this was the final phase of a very long tour of Pluto through my (mahoosive) fifth. This figures, because a lot of the power imbalances and issues evened out from early 2014, when Pluto moved into my sixth. At the same time it means that I should start taking into account that every single one of my relationships ever, from being 15, has been potentially been affected by Pluto-in-the-fifth. So Nemesis probably represents the culmination in nearly 20 years of unhelpful relationship behaviours on my part, rather than landing in my life as a fresh new issue. This is a fairly large shift in perspective!)

Also, being a 12H sun means that all of the transits that I thought I was going through, I'm about to go through again. I spent the last three years thinking that Saturn in Scorpio was in my fifth (difficult), now it's ACTUALLY in my fifth! Help!

Anyway, questions:
a) In your experience, is there anything at all in the whole sun-sign-as-first-house thingummy? I'm leaning strongly towards natals-from-the-ASC now, but still not 100% convinced that the sun sign doesn't come into play somewhere.

b) How does this fit with transits to the Sun? For example, Pluto will be opposing my Sun and squaring my Pluto before too long, will this play out as a 4H/6H/12H issue or will it involve issues of identity/self/others?

c) How important are transits of the natal houses compared to transits of natal planets? I can't work out if the 3H/4H are especially sensitive for me (Cancer Sun/Gemini Merc/Mars?), or if it's just that they contain a lot of planets (Jupiter/ Saturn/ Pluto/ Moon/ Uranus), or if they're sensitive because they contain a lot of planets.

Whilst answers to the above would be great, to be honest I'm just really interested in anyone else's thoughts - I'd love to see some other perspectives on this.

Interesting post, hello

If I'm understanding this correctly you're talking about newspaper/internet horoscopes and how it pertains to your personal horoscope. Is that correct?
I'll answer a.

a) online horoscopes are based on the Sun being in the first house so for this I would look at my Ascendant sign for my first house.

Did I answer you question?

Pretty much, it's just taking some adjusting! I probably wouldn't have taken any notice of them if they hadn't had a degree of accuracy.

Im intrigued by this question to. Because a few years ago I read an astrologer that claimed Neptune entering Pisces (Cancer solar 9th) would send some Cancers to school, and when I checked it happened (Neptune entering Pisces) at least the same month I decided to apply to university. I read this at least a year after starting my university studies.
I know some more general claims that would fit me as well counting solar houses.

So I would also like to hear more about this.

I too get interested by that. Because there are times when I read the horoscope for my sun sign and it fits more than the horoscope for my ascendant that actually describes my houses, and sometimes its the other way around.
And also the same happened to me cause I am a Leo with Virgo rising, so all these time that Saturn was in Scorpio, for Leo was about family and responsabilities in the house, etc...and now that is happening for Virgo but with Saturn in Sagittarius, but for Leo is the 5th and so on.
Should I take into a count the Leo transits or the Virgo transits? Of course the energy of the signs are different so I guess how a Leo experienced the Saturn transit through the 4th is going to be different how Virgos are living it now.

No. Its a shortcut to real horoscope reading.

It can play out similarly in some ways, but should not be equated as synonymous with house positions. Signs and houses are arc areas that are general fields of expression. Aspects (natal or transit) are focused dynamics of the primary energies of the planets.

Transits of houses are important in their own way as developmental processes that take time, especially when a slower moving planet is moving through them. They are not as potent or specific as the well-focused transits of planets to natal points/planets.

Oh hey! Replies! Thanks

I thought this thread had gone off quietly to die.

I'm really glad it's not just me. I've also had a few examples of really incredibly accurate prediction (only the odd one, though, honestly compels me to add that many of them haven't been).

I've noticed that I often notice more when a planet changes sign - particularly with Jupiter and Saturn - than I can feel a change of house. Or at least, the change seems more noticeable and more immediate.

I am trying to remember that what I thought was Saturn in my fifth was really Saturn in my fourth, AND aspecting lots of natals. So the great dread I feel at Saturn ACTUALLY in my fifth is probably unsubstantiated.

Thanks for your reply (although nuts to being so conned for so long...)

I'm still intrigued about things like the relationship between different houses (I like the idea that identity, partnerships, role and private sphere all square off and fight with each other when they're put in solar houses. I also like the 6H being inconjunct to the first, as this is frankly the way that I feel about work just now).

But, on the whole, I guess if I keep an eye out for natal houses insofar as they apply to a) transits to natal planets and b) aspects between transiting planets, I'll get as much information as I'm likely to get from anywhere.
