Hello! I want to learn more about those two things. I don't know a thing about them. How to determine if one has these coming up. Anyone willing to give me a little quick 411?

first of all, get yourself an EPHEMERIS and familiarize yourself with it. You will need it to see where transits are affecting your chart. There are various ephemeris you can buy such as Maynard's or Lellewyn's. You can also find free ephemeris online.

TRANSITS are the movements of planets through the sky/solar system. At any given time, the various planets (sun, moon, venus, mars, mercury, saturn, jupiter, neptune, uranus, pluto, chiron etc) are at a particular location, that is they are at a particular degree in a particular sign. For instance, right now, the sun is in the sign of Capricorn, and at 14 degrees of Capricorn. Venus is at 7 degrees of Sagg. Are you still following me? You can find this information (location of the planets) in an ephemeris.

Now, look at your natal chart. and place each transiting planet into your chart and you will see where they fall. For instance, if you have Venus at 14 degrees of Capricorn, the transiting sun is now conjunct your natal Venus.

RETROGRADES is the movement of planets seemingly going backward. The ephemeris will show you a Rx or a R next to that planet.

The above are cliff notes.

Google is your friend. Consult it as there is tons of info online explaining transits and retrogrades. We are very fortunate that we don't have to buy expensive books to learn astrology. All the info is available online, so let's make use of it.
