I want to learn to get really great at reading Solar and Lunar returns. I notice a lot of people post Solar Returns in the Personal Readings forum, but this thread is for GENERAL advice about reading these charts to get an accurate read on the month or year ahead.

-what do you look for in these charts to best predict events and themes?
-how accurate have your readings been? Do you think these charts are useful forecasting tools?

I haven't began studying lunar charts yet. but for the solar, it's actually quite simple, and you approach it quite like a natal chart.

most importantly the sign on the AC, planets on the AC, and the house where the ruler of the AC sits in the SR chart, your attitude, or where you put your effort throughout the year starting on your birthday and ending 365 days later on you next birthday.

when the AC in a SR is the same as the natal AC, this is gonna be a year with major events for you. when it's the opposite or the square AC, the person can experience hardships or stressful situations (some marriages).

each house from the sun, represents each month starting on your birthday and the events evolved around the planet in that house as well as the planet which rules that house's cusp and it's position in the SR chart. for instance if in this SR you have sun in the 9th, then this year your focus will be on philosophy, religion, spirituality or you might get to travel to abroad. this focus is also stronger the day on your last birthday, then for the next 30 years after your birthday, you look at your 10th house, the sign at its cusp and the planets in the 10th (if any) and what aspects they make to other planets. sometimes when I find the SR confusing I turn off pluto, uranus, and neptune to make the chart simpler, because these are the outer planets and the SR is a very individualistic chart. these planets will definitely still have their power, but it might be subtle to be noticed.

example:
the hardest year of my life so far, was when I had SR saturn conjunct the SR AC from the 12th.

another hard year, when I had sun, moon, mars, venus, mercury, saturn and some other planet I don't remember in the SR 8th.

this year has been also a tough one, SR saturn and mars in the 4th.

in all three years though positive things also happened and I'm thankful for many things.

SR houses which contain saturn, sun and the moon must be paid major attention to.

* the exact time of birth (the one on the birth certificate) is very important as the house positions change significantly in the SR

In general, I think girlwiththerainysoul gave some good suggestions. The only thing I have to add is that birth certificates can be a little off sometimes, so if your Solar Returns and Lunar Returns never line up with your life, your birth chart probably needs to be rectified. However, in general, birth certificates are a good way to narrow down what your real Ascendant is.

I'm not saying that your birth time is off. This is just a bit of advice from someone that spent most of her life not relating to astrology just because of a miscalculated Ascendant.

So far, I have managed to find some amount of accuracy from Solar Returns and Lunar Returns, but sometimes I don't find much in them when something significant happened that year or that month.

However, overall, the Sun's house placement seems to indicate the main focus of the entire year in the Solar Chart and the Moon's house placement indicates the main focus of the entire month.

I don't have much experience forecasting with Solar Returns and Lunar Returns. I haven't worked with them enough.

It was my personal experience sarah, it doesn't necessarily mean the same for everyone. Also, remember that you also have a SR jupiter which is as powerful as saturn. So try to focus on its house and the sun's house too

Next month is my birthday what do you think about aries ascendant
moon in aries 1st house opposing jupiter on the cusp of 7H (not actually on 7H)

and uranus in 12H..I mean what do you think about this combination?cpuld you tell me?SR falls in 11H and I think falls in 11H of my birth chart too.

Thanks for the examples you gave here.I will have sun in 9H next year.

I actually think Lunar Returns and Solar Returns are extensions of Tertiary and Secondary Progressions.

Thus, the Return Chart is not the "transit chart" but the chart corresponding to that date in the ephemeris.

Eg. When doing a Lunar Return is helps to know what # Lunar Return you are looking at. Is this your 1st Lunar Return - are you one month old? Or, 43rd Lunar Return? From here you consult your ephemeris and draw up a chart for that corresponding date.

My SR ASC Next year should be in Pisces which will lays in my 5th house Natal. So I am expecting a pretty exciting year!

What I am worried about is my 12th Stellium, all the planets are aspected decently but I have Sun, Mercury, Moon and Neptune in there, I will also have Saturn conjunct MC with Pluto in 10th. Very nervous about my career and if my music will come to fruition. I feel it will but I hope I enjoy playing live and me and my band can make some money. Really excited to see what will happen, Have Venus-Mars-Uranus conjunction in 1st also.

ok let me take a shot at this I really like Solar Returns, the only chart where everything changes

Aries ASC - You will proceed through this next year with a belligerent, motivated, and I will get what I want attitude. You will be supercharged with passion this time around I believe but your moon in the 1st will help you take a step back and evaluate your perspective. you will be very emotionally vulnerable this year and you are probably gonna show your heart to others without remorse (Aries); also Opposed good old Juppie so ur gonna have "big" emotions this year. probably going to be very popular this year, and have a nice home life. you will take no **** but you will be a very blunt and optimistic person.

jupiter in 6th cusp 7th ( i have jupiter in 7th this year) you are going to benefit in your daily life. you will most likely get by very swimmingly this year with little trouble, and will be eager to serve others and yourself. keen , philosophical insight in matters regarding your well being and thought process..since it's conjunct DC you will have good luck with other people I believe, finances and legal relations will go easy, and you will feel this emotionally (Moon)

uranus in 12th would probably mean you won't have that exciting of a year, since 12th is about what we hide from others and even ourselves, you probably won't care to be alone though and will want to be around others because Uranus represents misdirection, links to humanity, progressiveness, your higher thinking process , and where you are a rebel. I would google Uranus in Pisces for a better info on this (since Uranus is in 12th)

sun in 9th is pretty much having a sag sun for the upcoming year so you will be very confident, outgoing, and willing to travel to learn more about the world and to expand your consciousness

sounds like you will have a pretty good year but you will "in the now" and may need to take a chillpill so you don't get lost in the sauce

First steps?

° ASC-sign and ruler of ASC in Return chart and natal chart plus their aspects

° position of the Return-planet in particular

° position of Moon in Solar Return (it is where the heart is) and Sun in Lunar Return

° very important:
angular planets, including those that are tightly square the axis.

I also check for conj/ opp/ square to Vertex - not really angular, but will bring out of the blue experiences if triggered

° check especially the aspects between the angular planets if any, they WILL manifest in some way during the year.

For timing

° progressed Moon within the Solar Return chart, that one is awesome, for me it fit down to the day actually (Moon only will progress about 12-13 degrees in a Solar Return; in a lunar return this is not applicable)

° exact transits over the planets you analyzed as being important and foreground (especailyl the angular ones and chartrulers and possibly the other angle rulers as well)

Sun and Mars seem to be excellent triggers, though I actually have seen transiting Moon as triggering as well, especially if part of a New, Full or waxing or waning Moon, and/ or close to eclipses.

I`ve had SR ASC in my 12th house last year, not an easy year, but it had deep lows and GREAT heights; a year where I have done much reevaluation actually, pivotal.

But not a bad year really, a year for making some decisions that feel like a preparation for future developments.

Next year I am having SR ASC conjunct SR Mars exact, both falling into my 3rd house natally and conjunct my BML.

I guess next year will be more about communication, though I will have to check the inclination to get into verbal arguments, and possibly being careful while crossing the streets, too (Mars could bring too much impatience and carelessness, and I donīt want to have an accident.)

It will probably feel rather different though compared to 2016, when I had SR ASC in Scorpio in my 12th house.

BTW have you read the article by Celeste Teal?

I want to share these quotes with you

"When a Lunar Return closely matches the Solar Return by house cusps and house placements of the outer planets, a climatic four weeks will follow. In fact, this is likely to be the month in which the most important yearly events will take place. The most eventful period of the year will often find the same degree rising in the Lunar Return that was rising in the Solar Return. The Lunar Return Sun falling on an angle of the Solar Return also indicates an eventful period. When the Lunar Return Sun falls on a degree that activates an important Solar Return configuration, major yearly events indicated by the specific grouping will occur."

Can anyone verify this? That it was an important month, when the angles of the lunar return matched those of the Solar Return?

@Ceri

does the writer mean that each year there will be a such a month?

I checked my lunar returns for all the 12 months this years and no month matched my solar returns house cusps or outer planets placements. only for June I had a chart "pattern" the same as my this year's SR and yes I made a life changing decision that month which brought much emotional turmoil for a while actually, yet it also shaped much of my current situation.
but again, the house cusps nor the outer planets match my SR; but they're interestingly exactly reversed. for instance in my SR I have saturn in the 4th and in the LR for June I have it in the 10th. the same goes for other planets as well, and the whole chart is actually reversed. but my AC is different.

I could check for a couple of years before which I remember which month a major event happened. but it would take some time.

very interesting

NO it is not in every year, though interesting this december I am having a Scorpio ASC in my LR (though 14 degrees before the Solar one), but it means that Chiron is in 4th again and Uranus in 5th.

Next year however wll start with a BANG in that regard.

I have in my Solar Return

ASC 28 Aquarius
Mars 28 Aquarius

Lunar Return (starting on 1st january)

ASC 29 Aquarius
Venus 27 Aquarius

I am a little crept out by this. lol

(my pr Venus and BML are at 29 Aqua at that time too)

OH and I think, similiar chartpatterns, or reverse charts might fall into the category of important months, too
