I've noticed I tend to have "phases" of communication, as do some of my water mercury friends. It's a little more pronounced in the fixed one, perhaps.

There's times when I am so deep in silence that it's as if silence itself is an entity that's swallowed me whole. It's *physically* impossible to make a sound, make myself move even. Imagine meditating at the bottom of the ocean - that's what it's like.
It's impossible to break out of it. Just have to let it run its course. Once I *am* out of it, however - there's a flood of thoughts & feelings that burst forth. Like, right now - I'm just vomiting words everywhere (pardon the crass image ).

I noticed my Cancer & Pisces merc cousins - some of them - have similar phases. Pisces ones are harder to get a hold of, as in they'll just disappear. Scorp mercury can sit there like a piece of stone (I do this, unfortunately ), looking like they're not even breathing. Cancer ones are more directly mood-related. But also easier to get them out of, in a way.
I dunno if all this^, is because they may also have their mercuries in water houses (like I do). Or if "moody communication" is just a water mercury thing in general.

What do you guys think? Have you observed this with your friends?

I don't have a water mercury, as you should know. However, my Mercury has an exact conjunction to Neptune, making it very much like a Pisces Mercury. It is also conjunct my IC.

I say this because I do experience periods where I literally have nothing to say and periods where I can just go on and on about all sorts of things. One would think that with my Gemini Moon I would be an expert communicator when it comes to my feelings, but no. I absolutely struggle to talk about my feelings and when I do it comes out all garbled and strange; it just doesn't settle correctly with me. The only way I can properly get my feelings across is through text.

There are moments where people will get upset at me for not talking, when I literally have no idea of what to say and am sort of stuck in my mind. There are lots of things going through my mind at that point in time, but verbalizing them is not possible. Other times, I just can't stop talking. It's like an on/off switch.

^ I see what you mean..

And the text thing possibly might be an air sign trait? The chance to express oneself without an uncomfortable face-to-face situation (?)

TEHEHEHE I love reading about what others say about what I have on my natal chart. Too many times I go "Omg soooo true!!!" Hahahaha

I got a Pisces stellium with mercury in 3rd, Neptune in 1st makes sextil aspect to these guys

Where you said about period of silence and how we disappear... lol! Gave me a chuckle! I do a lot of what Electro said too! Sometimes I'm just not in mood to talk! I'm not mad or anything... I'm thinking or daydreaming lots in my head! I just wanna enjoy my daydream and my imagination and I wanna see where it goes!

I like to be silent in a group setting usually. I think it's because I'm observing the interaction instead of participating in the conversation. I'm watching how everyone's laughing, talking, excited, all that stuff. I become a listener and a counselor in one-on-one setting. I become a radio when I'm under stress or upset.

Moody is right, usually when I didn't want to be bothered! Obviously I never say this out loud - it's in my head! So no one has an idea and I lash out so I seem angry/moody without a reason.

I always feel bad for people around me! Hahahaha Water peeps are soooo confusing!

there are some times when i feel really watery and down without a proper reason and feel like if i would say something, others wouldn't understand or worse - i would poop a conversation with my 'bad' mood. so i just listen and try saying something not related to my feelings. although my looks and words are just sulked with that mood, so it's hard to get away from gloomy phases.

the other mood is when i feel i could explode. it's usually because i'm very happy or excited or have a lot to say. i talk really easy, evertyhing sounds good and sometimes reasonable (logical), i come up with interesting topics and generally feel bubbly and fun.

i have cancer mercury conjunct moon. and neptune with saturn aspecting my mercury.

it's hard for me to be detached. everything i say goes through a filter of the inside of me. sometimes it's good things and some times it's sadness.

and a lot of periods of silence. especially in a big group.

I can be that way, but I have a Fire Mercury square a Water Saturn. I've been feeling like shutting down social media for a few months now, but then I don't, instead talking more than I normally would.

^ Same, teasel...my Mercury is dampened by a square to its ruler, Scorpio Uranus.

I think Scorpio Mercury is one of the least talkative placements, usually. But these people can be masters of efficiency, saying a lot in one or two words. Similar to Cap Mercury, except Cap Mercury doesn't flood, it stays like a glacier.

My best friend has Pisces Mercury conjunct her sun, and she is very talkative, but I think she also forces herself to be, out of compassion. Also according to her mother's memory of her birth time, she is Gemini rising, 11H sun-Mercury.

Hmm.. Mine is square Saturn too, but also conjunct Mars.. Mix of effects.

Yeah, people who aren't very close to me - see me as a very quiet person. I'm a good listener. But with people who are close to me, every once in a while I do talk their ear off. Am especially fond of letters (although that goes both ways).

I tend to be more verbose with the written word.

Having said that, I do like (and always try) *distilling* concepts to their essence. Love it when things are expressed in the "best" sentence or two possible. (Re: Faith's point about efficiency).

I have the trine by transit, at the moment (Mercury-Saturn). I don't mean to take this off-topic, but I can feel my square, as well as a steadying influence. Maybe I'll start a separate thread, or find an old one.

@teasel,
Sure..! I love griping about my Merc-Saturn square.** Gimme half a chance.

It might be the trine that is the "steadying" influence - what do you think?

YES! Thank you for bringing up this topic. I feel like Water Mercuries aren't discussed enough on this forum.

What has been said resonates with me so much having Cancer Mercury. My SO also has Cancer Mercury and it explains a lot.

The "moody" communication says it all. It's so true. When in a "good mood" you can chat about anything and everything and then when in a "bad mood" you feel completely deflated, mute and almost sad because you feel like you have nothing to say. Almost like making conversation is impossible. True also, that it doesn't take much to bring you out of your funk if you suddenly feel a "spark" of inspiration (though I think this also depends on your other placements and maybe even house). I have my Mercury in the 3rd plus I am a Gemini Sun so I think that "spark" means more to me to get me going than someone else who may just stay in their funk until they want to come out of it.

Water mercuries unite! I can always tell when someone has a water mercury. The conversation flows so easily. As I read this I said "that is SO me" numerous times in my head.

I have a cancer mercury. I am notorious for going silent. The metaphor of drought and floods coincides perfectly. I spend a lot of time in my head being nostalgic. When I reflect on the memories I become really moody. This happens almost every day. There are times when I'm really talkative and other days I speak to no one. If someone tries to speak to me on my bad day responses are short.

People can tell when I'm in a good mood based on how much I'm speaking. I also notice that when someone asks me a question I spend a lot of time thinking about it...staring at the ceiling before I say it aloud. And when I say it aloud it's deliberate and slow.

Around groups of people I can be talkative for a few hours (if that) and then I go silent again. I'm in a communicative mood today but I'll probably wake up tomorrow and be the opposite. Side note: I have Neptune in 1st house, Mars in Gem.

Hmmm I have Scorpio Merc, RX.

I am generally a very quiet person. I basically only say something when I know it is worth while to the conversation.

Unless I really like you and we get along. Then I want to talk to you non stop about everything and also laugh like crazy

^ Yeah.

My (sort-of) ex has this position. And he is usually very quiet and reserved around people. But he talks to me in essays!

Naturally, my Virgo venus & Scorp mercury just eat it up.

It's all about the connection.

Haven't noticed that in myself, actually.

But that could be due to my Air influence (Asc and Venus) that somehow always finds a way to 'talk' when needed.

In private environments however, I can indeed be "guarded" and need my alone time away from communication.

My s.o has scorp merc conj pluto. It's more like a tsunami or something equally dramatic. He stews his thoughts for a while in the depth of Satan's *ss crack, then unleash it like there's no tomorrow. I usually look forward these magnificent events with great anticipation and excitement.

I like the crass image, btw *nod approvingly*
