Prepare well. Study the chart carefully and sleep on it a night or two.

Be willing to ask them questions to see how the usual interpretations might vary a bit from their actual life experience. Listening to them will be another part of your learning experience.

Love Kannon's advice!!

Having said that, sometimes you might be in a social situation where you don't have time to study their chart for a prolonged period of time. Like, maybe you're looking to pull Astrology from your "bag of tricks" when meeting someone new.

In which case, I think that it's important to look at every aspect/element of the chart as symbolizing energy. In other words, be prepared to know the energy of each Zodiac Sign, the Planets, the Houses etc. And don't focus too much on learning interpretations. If you know the energy for yourself, you'll be able to come up with a reasonable interpretation without the need to search anything up.

Going along with that idea, when you're sharing your interpretation, don't be afraid to be a little broad. After all, everything within the Natal Chart represents energy, and energy can be applied in numerous ways. For example, Mars square Uranus can be both the eccentric rebel (of the good variety) or the terrorist. (Yes, I'm giving an exaggerated example, but you hopefully get my point)

Which reminds me, don't automatically assume that a square or opposition is being negatively applied within someone's life. I have Neptune square my Moon and my Saturn. However, I have no problem being creative, when it comes to song-writing (I have other aspects to support this, though). Maybe others disagree, but I think that the best way to approach squares and oppositions is to first acknowledge it like you would a trine, conjunction, or sextile (in other words, how this could positively impact someone's life). Afterwards, then I think you can add in, "but you might have problems with ___, ____, and ___." After all, the people you will be reading probably have no knowledge of Astrology. Not only do you not want to immediately scare them, but you also want to be as accurate as possible, and accuracy means that you acknowledge that squares/oppositions are sometimes a driving force within someone's life, depending on how well they handle the stress.

Last two pieces of advice. #1 Try to briefly explain how you arrived at your conclusions, because you don't want them to be confused (i.e explain what The Sun, The Moon, Venus, etc. represent). #2 Don't isolate a single aspect and make a personality or life path judgement of the person.

This is just my own perspective. Maybe others on here disagree.

The Moon sign.

Most people dont know their moon sign but they will "recognize" it when you describe it.

If there is a double whammy i.e Sun in Sag/Moon in Sag etc. It may not be of great use and they may not buy it. So go for Mars/Venus.

Venus in Gem,Venus in Lib,Venus in Taurus and Ven in Pisces is easily "owned" by people. Even men

The issue is when you find Cancer Sun/Moon/Venus or Mars in a males chart. Because most guys perceive themselves very masculine, they may deny/shy away from acknowledging this energy

Mess around with Sidereal astrology as it may "hit" the mark with most. My Sun/Moon-Mars placements there resonate with me hectically. Add to that the Pisces Asc.

I don't know how because it seems so contradictory to say this-as I use western/tropical. But they do 👍

depends if you are reading out of your own interest, in which case you look for what interests you.

if you are doing a favour and giving the reading to them, then tell them their dominant elements. based off sun, 1) sun house, 2) sun sign 3) dominant elements

Follow up:

What's the best way to do long distance astrology readings with strangers?

I'm asking all this because someone I don't know wants me to read their chart and I said yes. This person is long distance and found me through my astrology blog.

I'm thinking of a gchat or gchat audio session. Where we can both talk/have a convo. What are your thoughts? Any advice.

Thank you

if you want to speak it then you can or do a long written response. that way they can hold onto it and reflect on it. unless they audio record.

here is how i would word it:

Start with their sun house. say it is their whole perception of life, and how they feel. describe to them for example they are (12th) very emotional. their main route in life is perhaps thinking of the grande ending. sorry that is a bad description. i am not a 12th houser. very intuitive, emotional.

envisions the future.

then i would say their sun sign, is a smaller part of their personality. i would tell them the traits of this.

then i would tell them moon house, moon sign.

then i would say their sun moon aspect. this is likely one of the most important parts of the chart. even if its not directly a solid aspect, maybe its only 43 degrees, instead of 45, you could say that more acute angles are more focused in life, more "jumping head first" while obtuse angles are more weighing, slow, open minded. open in spirit.

i have the square so i am on the fence for that one (rarely).

and you can say for example 43 is close to 45 which is an aspect of slight tension so you could say they kinda have that.

i would look through the chart to see if they have anything really noticeable. like a stellium. i would look for outlet planets. where for example all your planets are bunched together except there is 1 sticking out from the rest, this would be where they funnel and get fed from.

if they have many planets in air signs/houses then i would bring that up, cause even though they arent the sun, they have a major effect on higher understandings. the sun is how you "be" in life. but the planets paint how you percieve, and how you are as well.

then you have to work between describing planets in signs, to describing the aspects between all the planets.

so for example uranus is the wild part of a person, and also sharp get-to-the-core genious (imb which = in my belief).

so if its in a fire sign, they might enact that energy in a fire way. they might climb trees, they might jump from trees.

jumping from trees is not an emotional act, which is clearly much different then how a water uranus would express itself. a water uranus might provoke emotional reactions. like "yeah i killed a cat" to someone else, who would get surprised and concerned.

you could do that for each planet.

oh also bring up that the ascendant rules the head (cause first house energy = cardinal fire = head rulership) and that the sign on the horizon is the energy that combines with your head energy.

So if it's in gemini, their face appears with gemini energy. This is their "mask" in life.
