This kind of insight is what makes you such a treat to have around, Kannon, thank you!
I had a look at my three returns and they do tell a really interesting tale. Here's a bit of a stab at explaining it.
Return one: Scorpio Ascendant (rulers Mars in second, values; pluto in the third, deep transformative communication).
Mercury in the fifth house (playfulness? love affairs?). Moon in the third (thinking/talking about feelings). Natal house being brought to the Ascendant - the 8th house.
Phase one is about deep thinking, secretive in nature. Lots of introspective thinking and feeling.
Return 2 (currently active): Gemini Ascendant (ruler mercury in the 11th), Mercury in the 11th (house of communities, friends, the unusual), square the mars-saturn conjunction in capricorn (things coming to light, being revealed); sun conjunct mercury - there's a lot of focus on communication affecting my entire core.
Natal house being brought to the Ascendant - 4th, house of home. Moon conjunct vertex in 6th - electrical emotional insights, particularly surrounding the workplace.
Return 3 (the main one): Libra Ascendant (ruler venus in Gemini in the ninth learning about love and happiness), mercury in the seventh (house of partnerships and enemies), moon in the 1st, so will be a period of self-analysis and reflection. Natal house brought to the ascendant - 7th house.
From this, here's the (basic) narrative I can take from this period of mercury returns. Starting with a period of introspection, thinking about secret information and actions. Then there's a period of bringing that into the open. The long-lasting impact will see a lot of thought and communication around relationships for the next year.
Things I find interesting - when you cluster the placements together, you get a very solid consistent message. Eg scorp ascendant and pluto in the third, and a natal 8th house alignment all focusing on plutonic communication; similarly, libra ascendant, natal seventh house, mercury in the seventh - all emphasising the same themes.
In a work context - my natal mercury is tightly trine my MC - I have seen one play of these themes. A period of deep unhappiness based on personality mismatches, being probed to share feelings (which I hate, as I do not feel safe with the aggressor); has developed into a period where the entire team is being given tools to express what works and doesn't work for them based on their personality type.
The third return could therefore see a shift towards a harmony with my chief challenge, so we become constructive partners again - or it could be that the animosity grows and we become enemies, which will lead to a potential loss of income if I have to leave. In turn this could alter my living situation - and I have saturn tightly conjunct the third return's IC. Which could also represent that boss (saturn) crushing my personality.
