I have both venus and mars in acquarius, but I'm not sure if they are in conjunction as they are 9 02' degrees apart. I know the definitions for conjunctions differ.

Its tricky. The rule is that the closer the aspect, the better. So 9 degrees apart is quite wide. That's like 9 solar arc years.

Are they in the same house?

9 degrees is too wide between Venus and Mars. Not a conjunction.

Look to see if they are within about 1 degree in declination. That is a parallel aspect.
