Mercury acts like a conduit and bridge to your emotions (the moon) with your mind (mercury) and the rest of your natal chart and personality.

A quick basic breakdown of how each mercury element is:
A fire sign thinks and communicates passionately and in an impulsive matter.
An earth sign thinks and communicates practically and in an logical matter.
An air sign thinks and communicates intellectually and in a detached matter.

A water sign thinks and communicates emotionally and in an emotionally instinctual matter.

Mercury in Cancer communicates and think in a Watery/Lunar way. Cancer is a water sign ruled by the Moon. Water signs are the masters of using emotion and intuition. Like its sign counterparts Pisces and Scorpio, Cancer Mercuries think and communicate in typical water sign fashion. This is translates to communicating in emotional, indirect ways. A Cancer mercury person (like other water sign mercury signs) instinctively and naturally feel their way through things in terms of communication. A water mercury, especially Cancer will be able to understand others people emotions well and even possess natural psychic and intuitive abilities.

The Cancer mercury person will not communicate in an aggressive, detached or logical fashion. A mercury in Cancer person will be deeply invested in their own and others' emotional inner being. Mercury in Cancer will often asking how one is feeling? during conversations and reveling in conversations with emotional depth. *Note: this differs slightly between Men and Women and how comfortable they are around you.*.

Mercury in Cancer will come across as shy and quiet, but that could them trying to figure and feel you out. Downsides to Mercury in Cancer

As a cardinal mercury Cancer Mercuries are dynamic communicators that initiate communications (especially if they are close to you.)

Cancer mercury will rant, rave, ***** , moan to whomever will listen to them and will say vile things when angry or provoked in the heat of the moment. Mercury in Cancer will also take things personally and bring up things from the past.

Mercury in Cancer will be inconsistent and a bit unpredictable (especially when upset or infuriated). They may be quiet one moment, and then angry the next. Reasoning with mercury in Cancer when they are upset is not worth. You either have to ride it out like a wave (or a tide) or approach it from an emotional point of view. Make them feel safe, emotionally step into their shoes and have them (emotionally) step into yours will defuse a bad situation.

A weird thing with Mercury in Cancer is they can be both direct/assertive and passive aggressive communicators. Shyness or reserved, doesn't necessarily mean they are push overs, though. If they need let you know something, they will.

Sometimes a Mercury in Cancer person will withhold what they want to say because it will hurt someone or don’t know someone well). At times if they are comfortable with someone they will let it ALL out. Sometimes they won't say anything and expect you to read their minds (even if they are close to you and know you well). It all depends on a Mercury in Cancer's mood.

Upsides to Mercury in Cancer

Mercury in Cancer have good memory, so if you lied to them, they will know, remember, and treat you accordingly. The cancer mercury person feels their way through situations and communication. Mercury in Cancer is also low-key psychic.

A Cancer mercury person is that person that will listen (and understand you on an emotional level) when you are upset, scare or sad. A Mercury in Cancer person will often start a sentence with I feel (rather I think, I know, or I believe). Cancer is protective of their self and feelings and the need to communicate and express them constantly. If they love (and are not angry at you) they will make you feel like you have a safe haven in them to say whatever you need to say without judgement or fear.

Overall Mercury in Cancer communication style is one of emotional honesty and support. Just don't **** them off.
