Or does there really have to be an aspect between the two planets for it to count?
I'm asking because some people say they don't actualky count while others say they do. I guess it just depends on the person.

An aspect intensifies the connection and so the more exact the aspect interaction becomes ,the more central it is to the relationship.

A Venus in Gem 0 deg with a Lib 17 deg have a nice trine by sign connection.

But this can be overshadowed or underplayed if there is an accompanying Venus in Gem 0 deg opp Pluto in Sag 0 in the same relationship.

Instead of the Venus-Venus trine by sign easy connection. The relationship has themes of intense disagreements, standoffs, passionate points of view etc.

So the above trine by sign is not fully recognized at all. As the two are readily responding to the urgency of the more potent opposition aspect.

Declinations will also work the same way.

I just wanted to add that its interesting that you should ask this question. As when I started to study astrology, I used to read a column by William Smith- a local astrologer- in magazines that my Mom bought.

He didn't deal with aspects at all but planetary positions and their subsequent meaning i.e Mercury in Taurus is a practical thinker etc.

It is only after coming to this forum and the explosion of the information age, that aspects started to dominate.

This is so much so that when people write something about a planet concerned, they will add "provided there is no hard aspect from Uranus" etc.

I wonder if one would still get the "full picture" if one was to leave degree placements and aspects out? i.e they would interpret based strictly on planet by planet position alone?

Because it seems that degree aspects and cross relationship planet interpretation in synastry has added both insights as well as complication.

I used to only worry about Moon-Moon or Venus-Venus compatibility in synastry comparison. I didn't even include the degree aspects

But now....yikes!

What about Moon sextile Saturn? With Moon and Saturn parallel?
