I do natal and progressed chart readings, but with that (and transits) you really don't need solar or lunar returns. At some point it gets to be too much astrology stepping on and contradicting each other. There are a few things I say regarding some of these:
1) The only houses that matter are those in your birth chart (not progressed or any other chart).
2) A solar return (or lunar return) is just a transit chart for one day.
3) If you include declinations in reading natal, transit, and progressed readings you won't have gaps left to fill in with anything else. Declinations are the missing piece most astrologers are missing in the readings they do.
4) Full understanding of the natal chart and transits (meaning it includes declinations) are enough for most people to navigate their lives intelligently and understand the process they are in.
I've been studying and practicing over 20 years and I just don't need solar returns, solar arcs, lunar returns, tertiary progressions to give readings. No one does really. A good understanding of transits -- including declination transits -- is usually 75% of the trends/forecast picture. Sometimes there are some major progressions that are worth including.
Astrologers that push solar return charts and all these other types of readings -- especially lunar returns -- have their heads too stuck in the hypothetical and are looking for more frequent business. It will likely not give you better or clearer insight into your life.
