This started as a bit of fun: I noticed a shift in musical tastes (at least in the UK) around the same time as Uranus moved into Pisces back in 2003, so I thought "well, Uranus seems a good fit for youthful rebellion - what if there's a connection?"

So I looked and... well, it is a bit uncanny. Is this a known thing? If I may present my case:

(I'm leaving out the return visits to the previous sign between the start-finish dates for simplicity's sake).

(I'm also counting when a music scene crossed over into mass public consciousness as opposed to when it began).

1955 - 1961: Uranus in Leo

Rock 'n' Roll. Fits the swagger and confidence of Leo. And Elvis was known as The King (of the jungle?) Uranus in Fire seems to me to bring out a lot of well known solo artists too, as opposed to bands.

1961 -1969: Uranus in Virgo

Mods - the epitome of fashion perfectionism. But also hippies and the Summer of Love - earthy, barefoot and with flowers in your hair. Sounds like a lot of pictures of Virgo I've seen. In fact, Uranus in Earth signs does seem to bring a more "earthy" vibe to things.

1968 - 1974: Uranus in Libra

Glam rock - need we say more? Lots of glitter and androgeny (maybe a balance thing?) Also: Prog Rock. Uranus in Air seems to me to bring out a more intellectual element to music sometimes, as opposed to pure emotion.

1974 - 1981: Uranus in Scorpio

This one was the one where I thought "no... that's too perfect! Surely not...": Punk Rock. Seriously. Uranus hits Scorpio and S&M gear is suddenly all the rage. You couldn't make it up. Also: Disco hits its peak (breaking taboos) and New Wave - curiously New Wave also bridges into the next sign, however there's a moment where it evolves. Uranus in Scoprio New Wave is all Gary Numan, lots of black and Berlin Era Bowie inspired stuff. But then...

1981 - 1988: Uranus in Sagittarius

...it suddenly becomes "New Romantic". Lots of brash, flashy colours and swashbuckling attire. And once again: Fire focus on solo artists: Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins are the big names. Everything becomes very flash and shallow until...

1988 - 1996: Uranus in Capricorn

College Rock crosses over and then Grunge - I mean, you even have goatee beards! Again, with the earthy vibe - 1989 is even called the Second Summer of Love. One curious and controversial thought I had was that Capricorn also ushers in House Music and Raves, given Grunge arrives a bit later. Here in the UK, 1988 onwards saw a plethora of free parties held in the middle of nowhere and this period also kickstarted the whole festival scene as a mass public event. "But Capricorn's boring!" you might argue "he's too staid for all-night parties!" Not at all, I'd say. Capricorn rules Saturnalia, one of the wildest parties in the ancient world. And Pan, the goat man, was Dionysus' partner in crime when he was - that's right - holding all night parties in the middle of nowhere.

1995 - 2003: Uranus in Aquarius

American Idol: what could be more revolutionary than flipping things over and making *the people* the stars, right?? Also the birth of "IDM" (intelligent dance music) - the moment when EDM shifted from simple dancefloor tunes into more classical and jazz related territory (again with Air and the intellectual).

2003 - 2011: Uranus in Pisces

Emo: this stuff almost writes itself.

2010 - 2018: Uranus in Aries

Alas, by now I'm getting a bit too old to notice what the current trend has been. But again, there's been a breakdown in dominance of bands: a lot of music now seems to me to be made by superstar producers with superstar vocalists and/or superstar rappers.

2018 - 2026: Uranus in Taurus

TBC...

Apologies if this is something that's already a much discussed thing. But I just found it so fascinating I had to share.

It is interesting. I didn't notice this.

It could be that I am getting older? But I have also become indifferent to musical trends. As I can't tell you who is who right now. They all are starting to sound or look the same.

Wow, interesting read. Good job.

A thing I may add is that Britpop was also huge in the UK during Uranus in Capricorn's reign, yet seemed to embrace the opposite of what grunge stood for. Both genres were worlds apart, at least from what I have gathered as an American. Britpop was more upbeat overall, with emphasis on celebrating youth culture/making stuff happen. Grunge in contrast was more gloom and doom, wallowing in depression and self-pity. I suppose the "making stuff happen" aspect of Britpop could be a possible correlation to Uranus in Capricorn, but the genre itself seems a little off for Capricorn, tbh. Well, that also may be where the celebratory part of Capricorn comes in, as the other side of the coin that often goes unspoken. Britpop didn't make it big here in America either, yet grunge was big in both regions. Either way, the somber undertones of grunge prevailed in the end.

You skipped signs-- Cancer, Gemini, and older Taurus!

I'm a Uranus Cancer here...

I really like the Uranus in Gemini era

@Moongaze: Good catch about Britpop! At first I thought it might fall into Uranus in Aquarius, but you're right - the dates don't match. My initial thought is that, despite being optimistic, it was also painfully nostalgic and traditional, deliberately aping the tastes of the then-youth's parents. So much so, the press labelled the likes of Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene "Dad Rock" - I can't think of any other popular music period in my memory where such a description could be considered cool - and yet it was! So there's a strong presence of Saturn as the father figure running through it. Optimistic, yes, but with a strong sense of tradition and conservatism. Hmmm... will have to think on it more...

@mirage29: That's fascinating stuff - showing my own inexperience in not having a confident grasp on what went before! Looking at the dates, there seems to be correlation between Uranus in Gemini and "Sinatramania"/Bobby Soxers which is intriguing... Someone also told me that Fred Astaire and a theme of lots of opulence and sensual glamour in music fit the Uranus in Taurus period. If yourself or anyone else with more knowledge on these of these earlier periods has any further thoughts I'd love to hear them!

@Aries23degrees & @Lalafortunea: Thanks!

I'd give this to Neptune, actually.

Neptune in Scorpio- Psychedelic sounds (Beatles, Beach Boys, early Rolling Stones and The Who, Jefferson Airplane, The Turtles, The Byrds, The Zombies)
Neptune in Sagittarius- Progressive, upbeat sounds (Progressive rock, New Wave, Disco, Funk)
Neptune in Capricorn- Earthy sounds (Grunge, Heavy Metal, Hair Bands, Soft rock... sounds are either very gritty or very glamorous, like the materialism culture at the time)
Neptune in Aquarius- Unusual, original sounds (Boy Bands, Techno Pop, Nu Metal, Emo, etc.)

Uranus does have its role (Emo was mainly during Uranus in Pisces and Grunge was definitely during Uranus in Capricorn, however New Wave was mainly during Uranus in Sagittarius and Progressive Rock was mainly during Uranus in Scorpio, as bands like Styx, Foreigner, Supertramp, and ELO reached their peaks in the late 70s, during Uranus in Scorpio), though Neptune is more reliable for long term trends.
