i know the orbs should be very tight

i've heard smaller aspects, even trines possibly aren't that powerful

i've noticed that conjunctions are maybe the strongest aspect?

what else?

There are squares, oppositions too. And trines/sextiles are so underrated. But they are also potent. Not just the conjunction.

Debate however continues with the quincunx/in conjunct, the semi-sextile ,semi square, sesquiquadrate etc. This debate centers on whether they are "valid" of not and should be overlooked.

I would start with the major Ptolemy aspects and then study the latter ones to come to your own opinion.

Yes, conjunctions do contain of their nature more emphasis and define the potential for new starts than other transits, just as they do in the natal chart.

All astrological aspects, including those in transit, work in aggregate. The orbs need to be tighter than what we use in natal readings, but they don't need to be very tight. I've been reading charts for over two decades and the orbs for transits of most planets and most major aspects are around 4-5° (conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, oppositions). Quincunxes, about 2°; parallels and contra-parallels, 0°50' or so for Pluto to around 1° for most of the others (Sun, Moon, maybe a bit more).

Get the classic book by Robert Hand, Planets in Transit and look at how aggregate transit figures are calculated for timing. He's got some general rules that help bring things into focus and learn how to look at transits.

It is very important that you first learn natal astrology thoroughly to get the proper foundation for reading transits. That means learning aspects, planets in signs, etc.

The main aspects people consider are conjunctions, oppositions, and squares.

In general, I'm starting to think all aspects from transits are relevant and important ones will manifest regardless of the aspect in question. For me, I've had trines from Saturn and Pluto manifest. Neptune's recent quintile to my North Node and Pluto's current sesquiquadrate also manifested for me and they weren't subtle manifestations at all. They were and have been super in-my-face about it.
